West Ham Fan View: Three key players in Hammers' relegation battle

Arnautovic, Hart and Lanzini will be key to the Hammers’ relegation fight

West Ham currently sit in 17th place with eight games left to play. It is looking increasingly likely that we will be relegated this season, given our upcoming fixtures. But which three players will be key in our relegation battle?

Marko Arnautovic

This would have been a shock at the start of the season given the way Marko Arnautovic started his West Ham career. Arnautovic was signed for a record fee, though did not produce the performances early on to justify this. He failed to score for months and fans were starting to get frustrated.

But the arrival of David Moyes saw a big change in Arnautovic’s form and he is now our most important player. He has not been producing as of late, but he is on seven goals and we need him on his top form, given that he is our only real goal threat. His confidence has grown and we may rely on him too much, but we did not pay a record fee for no reason.

Joe Hart / Adrian

Not having a settled goalkeeper has harmed us all season. When Joe Hart was signed, many doubts were expressed, given his poor performances at Torino. Whilst he did produce some great saves, we cannot forget the mistakes that he made which led to many goals conceded. He was dropped for Adrian but, likewise, he has made some costly errors.

Hart came back into the team for the game against Burnley, though Adrian was recalled for our last game against Crystal Palace. They have now both played 15 games each this Premier League season and Moyes cannot keep rotating the goalkeeper. We need a settled back-line or we will continue to see the inconsistencies that we have seen.

Manuel Lanzini

Manuel Lanzini has underperformed this season. He has started 19 times and only produced three goals and five assists. Lanzini is undoubtedly our most creative player and when he plays well, the team often plays well. He has not been helped by the disorganisation behind him this season, but as we saw with Dimitri Payet, one player’s quality can transform our team. Will we see Lanzini return to his best for our final eight games?
