Liverpool make world-record £62million bid for Alisson

Liverpool have bid a world record £62 million for Roma goalkeeper Alisson as Jurgen Klopp looks to solve his goalkeeper problem.

Alisson has been Klopp’s number one target all summer, the situation growing in urgency as the new season nears after Loris Karius’ calamitous Champions League final performance.

Roma’s valuation has been prohibitive so far, and talks are ongoing with the Italians standing firm on a 75 million euro valuation.

Chelsea are also interested in the Brazilian number one, but Liverpool will hope their long-term pursuit gives them the advantage.

Karius inevitably received severe criticism after two unfathomable errors gifted Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale goals in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win.

Klopp was already considering a new goalkeeper before that poor performance.

Tentative inquiries for Brazilian international Alisson were rebuffed last January.

Karius has received public support from his manager, but he made another error in his club’s pre-season friendly at Tranmere last week. Klopp has also suggested Danny Ward could challenge for the number one jersey.

His and club's preference has always been a new keeper, but only at the right price.

For Liverpool to now make such a staggering offer – breaking the world record for a goalkeeper by at least £25 million – demonstrates how keen Klopp is to remedy the situation ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Alisson was Brazil's number one in the World Cup. He is not due back in pre-season training until the end of the month. Liverpool will now be hoping he is doing so on Merseyside alongside his Brazilian teammate Firmino.
