Ramon Vega exclusive: Guardiola will create a 'superclub' after ruthless City ditch Pellegrini

Yahoo's Sport Business Correspondent Ramon Vega believes the man who learned his trade from Johan Cruyff can take the mega-rich club to the highest level possible

So it’s been confirmed. Pep is coming to the Premier League and is bound for the blue side of Manchester.

What a great coup for City. In securing the services of the best coach in the world I believe they have put the final piece in place in the jigsaw that will see them reach a truly global status.

Of course, their success in recent years has cemented their position amidst the elite of English football.

However, under Guardiola’s guidance they could smash on through to the next level and join the gilded few ‘Superclubs’ whose shirts are omnipresent in every corner of the world.

Champions League success has been elusive for City but winning that competition playing the sort of football that Guardiola has made his trademark would be transformative.

I do feel a bit sorry for Manuel Pellegrini, who has kept his dignity throughout his tenure at the Etihad, as well as maintaining the club’s upward trajectory.

But City needed to be ruthless and act fast to get their man. It is clear that the club structure and hierarchy has been moulded to fit Guardiola’s talents perfectly.

His old team-mate Txiki Begiristain is embedded at City, as is his former Barca colleague Ferran Soriano, while Pep’s brother Pere has moved the UK office of his football agency to Manchester.

With a substantial war-chest and rivals such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all going through rebuilding processes, the potential is there for Guardiola’s reign to herald a period of domination for City.

Of course, it won’t be straightforward. The relentless focus of the front and back pages of the media and the fierce physicality of the Premier League will take time to adjust to.

Some will question if Pep’s brand of football will work in England but he is clever enough to fit his philosophy into the environment he is in.

I played against Pep whilst I was in Switzerland and you could see he had something about him – a calm, an aura to go with his hugely bright and inquiring mind – which marked him out.

Having learned from Johan Cruyff as his footballing Yoda, he has always had the ability to see the game differently on the pitch and that has translated to a stellar career as a coach.

The Blue Moon has risen. Over the coming years we may well see a total eclipse.
