'We will see' - Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners leaves door open for Liverpool transfer

Playmaker Teun Koopmeiners has refused to rule out an exit from Atalanta amid growing links with Liverpool.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes as his side defeated Bundesliga invincibles Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final in Dublin on Wednesday to end the German club’s 51-game unbeaten run.

The 26-year-old still has three years left on his contract but said in March that he had informed his employers about his wish to leave this summer. Koopmeiners is likely to be taken to Euro 2024 by the Netherlands so his future might not be sorted until after the tournament.

The Dutchman - who has 15 goals and seven assists in 49 matches this season - played 58 matches under Arne Slot at AZ Alkmaar, recording 21 goals and seven assists. Reports are linking him with a reunion with the new Liverpool head coach and the player has not attempted to cool the talk.

Speaking after Atalanta’s Europa League final triumph, he told Sky Italia, via Football Italia: “I’m only happy to enjoy this title with the fans, I’m focused on celebrating. Next season? I don’t know. We will see.”

Back in March, Koopmeiners was more explicit about his plans for the future, dropping a major hint that the Premier League was one destination he was looking at.

He told De Telegraaf: “I have indicated to Atalanta that I want to make a move next summer. But there must be something very nice to exchange that for Atalanta.

“My girlfriend and I are having a great time in Italy, but I can put up with the rain for some clubs in England! I hope there will be great options that I can think about. And then I hope that Atalanta receives a nice amount for me, because I had a wonderful time there.”
