The January transfer window is nearly over yet West Ham are yet to sign a player. Given our recent form in the Premier League, this isn’t as big a worry as it was when the window first opened.

But which positions should we target if we do go into the market?

Right-wing

Michail Antonio was our Hammer of the Year last season but he has struggled this season, a lot. Last season, he got nine goals and three assists but he is currently only on one goal. Injuries have haunted him this season and we have missed his ability to drive the ball up the pitch and find space in the box.

We rely too much on Manuel Lanzini and Marko Arnautovic in the squad for creativity in attack and we should look to sign a right-winger. Michail Antonio, when he returns, needs competition and this will allow us to play a formation with real wingers. David Moyes did try Arnautovic there and whilst he did play well, we should not move him from his current position.

Central midfield

Our central midfield has been one of our biggest problems over the past few seasons. In many games our midfield has been over-run and we have lacked control there. This has left our defence exposed and played a role in our dire defensive record.

It’s not only in defence but also in attack where we need more creativity from our midfielders, with Cheikhou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang failing to impress this season. We have been linked with Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Allen, two players who know the Premier League well. Leander Dendoncker is another player who has been heavily linked and he is the player that I believe we should go for. His arrival would undoubtedly be exciting given his age and potential.

Striker

It is rumoured that we are willing to listen to offers for Diafra Sakho, Andre Ayew, Andy Carroll, and Javier Hernandez. That is all of our strikers. Yes, they all have struggled to score this season but this exodus may be too rash. It will be hard to find a suitable striker and given our record of signing strikers, it is hard to be optimistic. We should stick with Javier Hernandez until the end of the season with the team now playing better, he may score more goals.
