11 former Hibs players set to become free agents including expensive flop
We're at that time of year where players in Scotland and further afield have to start thinking about their futures.
Contracts are typically quite short at a lot of our clubs and that means there is a host of stars scrambling about every summer trying to find a new team. Hibs have had a lot of turnover in their playing squad in recent years and that means a lot of those with unresolved futures are former Easter Road men.
Fans are always interested in where former players' careers have taken them and how they fare in comparison to their performances when at the club. So Football Scotland has decided to take a look at 11 ex-Hibees who could well be on the move yet again this summer.
Greg Docherty
Only at Easter Road a short time in a loan deal from Rangers but left an impression on supporters, many of whom wouldn't mind seeing him return. Has fallen down the pecking order at Hull City and has plenty of English Championship experience from his time there.
Matt Macey
The towering goalkeeper hasn't played a lot of football since swapping the Hibees for Luton Town two years ago. While acting as back-up during the Hatters' promotion season he joined Portsmouth on loan in League One. Made that permanent at the start of this campaign but hasn't played since.
Demetri Mitchell
The man who has played on both sides of the Edinburgh derby isn't exactly remembered fondly by either set of fans. Signed for Gary Caldwell at Exeter but a serious injury ended his season early and now faces a crossroads.
Alex Gogic
Things didn't work out for the Cypriot at Easter Road but has flourished at St Mirren since and has been an absolute standout this campaign as the Buddies aim for Europe. Will likely have admirers as he comes out of contract.
Paul McGinn
Mr Dependable has continued to carry out that role at Motherwell and is a regular in Stuart Kettlewell's side. At 33 he won't have many more moves left - could he add yet another Scottish side to his list of clubs?
Vykintas Slivka
The former Juventus man blew hot and cold during his time in Leith but was up against the likes of Dylan McGeouch, John McGinn and Fraser Fyvie for a game in the midfield. Has since played in the Greek top flight for Apollon Smyrnis and Lamia but his deal with the latter is running out.
Stephane Omeonga
A fan favourite during an initial loan spell but the Belgian didn't flourish as much on his return. Went on to be a key man at Livingston after a spell in Italy with Pescara but left West Lothian for Israelis Bnei Sakhnin. Could be on the move again.
James Collins
Classed as a flop at Hibs but that was more likely down to the fee paid over him, with only six goals scored in his one season at the club. Has since rattled in goals at lower league level in England, including in the second tier with Luton, and has accrued 13 Republic of Ireland caps. Just helped Derby County to promotion from League One but may be on the lookout for a new club at the age of 33.
Stevie Mallan
Swapped Hibs for a Turkish adventure with game time hard to come by in Leith. Despite enjoying things on the pitch, suffered from a pay dispute as so many players experience in Turkey. Returned to the UK with League Two Salford in 2022 and has five goals across two seasons.
Simon Murray
What a season the 32-year-old is having for Ross County with 18 goals for a team battling relegation. Left Hibs for a shock move to South Africans Bidvest Wits and returned to help Queen's Park from League Two to the Championship.
Brandon Barker
Becomes a free agent after leaving Morecambe. The once highly-rated winger had a loan spell at Easter Road from Manchester City and did enough to earn a permanent deal with Steven Gerrard at Rangers. Ended up at Reading via a loan spell at Oxford and Neil Lennon then took him out to Cyprus with Omonia Nicosia.
