Bikila was a last-minute addition to Team Ethiopia, so when he arrived in Rome, they didn't have running shoes to fit him. Bikila had trained barefoot, so he decided to run the race barefoot as well. He took home the gold, set an Olympic record with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 6 seconds, and was the first athlete from sub-Saharan Africa to win an Olympic gold medal.

Moussambani struggled after his first 50m but finished with encouragement from the crowd with a time of 1:52. He said of the experience, "I was the first swimmer from my country to compete in the 100m freestyle in an international competition. I was so happy with that achievement, even if my time of 1:52 was not very good. The Olympic spirit is all about taking part, and I think it’s that strength and spirit that made me famous."
