Alan Shearer left Gary Lineker “choking” after claiming he was superior to Harry Kane.

Tottenham legend Kane is certainly one of the finest players of his generation and arguably the best striker in the world today. Having already claimed the title of England's all-time leading goalscorer, a World Cup golden boot, and three Premier League golden boots, he has also managed to become the Bundesliga's top scorer in his debut season with Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old’s goalscoring prowess at Tottenham over the last 10 years brought him within just 47 goals of Shearer's all-time Premier League record (260). Many believed he could have surpassed the Newcastle legend if he had stayed in England for a few extra seasons, placing him firmly ahead of Shearer in the debate for the greatest English striker of the modern era.

Now Shearer himself has shared his thoughts on the comparisons between the two, who each dominated their respective eras. Shearer’s tongue-in-cheek response came as he, Lineker and Micah Richards were responding to fan mail on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast.

The Mirror report how Lineker initiated the conversation by reading: "Jonathan Bennett – 'A question for Alan. I had a disagreement with my 26-year-old son over who was better, Shearer or Kane? He argued that Kane was both a better all-round player and had a better goals per-game ratio'.”

He continued: “'I argued that Shearer was a better goalscorer and played against better defenders who could kick you from pillar to post. Can Alan put modesty aside'... F***ing no chance! 'And help me argue the case for Shearer please?’”

Shearer cheekily responded: “Jonathan, make sure your son listens to you because you're absolutely spot on," adding after a brief pause in a deadpan manner: "I mean Kane's good isn't he, but come on."

The comment sent both ex-Spurs striker Lineker and ex-Man City defender Richards into heaps of laughter, with the former finally managing to say through laughs: "I'm choking!” The Match of the Day host then added: "I think his son's showing good signs of superior football knowledge than his father. I think Kane wins on all fronts really."

Despite Kane's impressive goals-per-game ratio at 0.66 trumping Shearer's 0.59, the Magpies hero managed to notch 64 assists as well as his three Golden Boot awards. That edges Kane's recorded 47 league assists during his stint with Spurs.

Shearer netted 30 goals across 63 appearances for England between 1992 and 2000, a stat trumped easily by Kane's tally of 62 goals in just 89 matches over nine years. Despite these stats, however, Shearer achieved the feat of a league title win during his days with Blackburn, while Kane is yet to win a trophy in his career.
