Alexander Isak delivers big Newcastle United fitness update ahead of Liverpool clash

Newcastle United. striker Alexander Isak has declared himself fit to face Liverpool on Wednesday nigh in the Premier League.

After initial assessments the injury is not as bad as first feared and he will be able to face Arne Slot's team at St James' Park. The Sweden international had enjoyed just three touches of the football before his afternoon was curtailed by a challenge from Tyrick Mitchell. Within minutes of the collision, Isak was clutching his hip and unable to run around freely.

But despite hobbling to the dressing room at half-time and being unable to continue with 21 minutes on the clock, Isak has recovered well from the blow. Isak had already missed seven matches for club and country this season due to a toe injury after being rushed back.

Isak told beIN Sports: "I am fine. It was really painful, a bad knock, but I've responded well."

When asked if he will face Liverpool, Isak, speaking to beIN Sports' Andy Kerr, said: "That's the plan."

Isak was also talking about the Wor Flags tribute to him in the previous home game and said: "I am humbled but I wanted to give something back to the Newcastle fans. I wanted to do that anyway but I have never felt like that anywhere else."

Howe said on Saturday night: "It was a contact injury, not a muscle pull, which is good news for us. We hope he will recover quickly but at this moment I don't know."

But Howe's first instinct has proved to be correct and Isak will lead the line against Liverpool.
