Ally McCoist reacts to Match of the Day host rumours as Rangers legend hits out at 'cop out'
Ally McCoist isn't so sure about the BBC turning to a cast of rotating hosts to replace Gary Lineker in the Match of the Day chair – and a radio colleague branded it a 'cop out' live on air.
It's the end of an era on the Beeb's flagship Premier League highlights show with Lineker to step down at the end of the season. He'll continue hosting live football for the broadcaster, but for the first time this century, he will vacate the MOTD presenter's chair for good. It's led to droves of speculation over who could replace him, from regular Match of the Day 2 anchor Mark Chapman among the obvious frontrunners while others such as Alex Scott, Gabby Logan and Jason Mohammad have been mooted.
A story run by The Sun on Wednesday morning suggested one possible solution under consideration is a 'job share' between Chapman and Kelly Somers, known for presenting on other BBC Sport broadcasts and Sky Sports News. But Rangers hero McCoist and Troy Deeney spoke on talkSPORT and both prefer the idea of one permanent host.

McCoist said: “I don’t know about job share….” before Deeney added: “Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. I feel it’s an iconic show and you’re used to seeing one person. I want to go and see one person, whether that be Chappers or that be Kelly. I know both of them, great, great people.
“So whoever you choose to go with, I think trying to job share it is a cop out, in my opinion. Make a decision, go with somebody and then we all know that's where the show’s going, that’s who it is.
Host Shebahn Aherne then asked what Match of the Day can do to compete with other highlights formats which are more convenient and accessible for the digital generation than having to wait until 10.30 to watch them on BBC One. McCoist said: “I've grown up with it, I've always loved it. I really have. I've loved it. And I'm with you mate. I think whether it’s Chappers or Kelly, I think you should have one focal point presenting it. And it's a tough job to follow because Gary’s been brilliant.
“Gary’s been brilliant since 1999, 24, 25 years and like Des Lynam before him, all the guys before him are iconic. But you make an interesting point, Shebahn, like anything else, like newspapers, for example. It is really hard to be a part of it.
“We’re seeing the goals before we pick up a newspaper. We've seen the goals before we watch Match of the Day - we’ve known all about the sending offs, everything, so it’s very, very difficult to keep it as topical as possible. But for me, guys… I think it should be one person, new person fronting it.”
