Another fine weekend of rugby union as perfect starts continue

COULD this season turn into one to remember for rugby union in the town?

Of course, it is still early days but our two highest-ranking teams could not have started any better.

Lymm and Warrington are both joint-top of their respective leagues having both won their first three matches, with the former’s second year at National League level starting in extremely promising fashion.

After two wins on the road, Lymm’s first XV were in action at Crouchley Lane for the first time as they took on Fylde and they sent their home crowd home happy after picking up maximum points yet again.

The hosts ran out 49-14 victors, with vice-captain Nathan Beesley scoring a try in each half while Tom Shard landed five conversions and three penalties from the tee to finish the afternoon with 19 points of his own.

Beesley, Rob Makin and Paddy Jennings touched down before the break to put Lymm into a position of command at the break, but they were still short of a four-try bonus point at the break.

That came shortly before the hour mark when Beesley doubled his tally before Isaac Millachip made it an afternoon to remember for him by scoring his first senior try.

Nick Rigby rounded off Lymm’s try-scoring from a quick-tap penalty to put them alongside Leeds Tykes and Wharfedale as the only teams with maximum points from their opening three matches.

“We knew how dangerous Fylde can be, but it’s one thing talking about it and another thing actually stopping it on a Saturday,” said head coach Andy Davies, who will now prepare his side for a trip to Sheffield Tigers on Saturday.

“Massive credit has to go to the boys – they are taking everything being thrown at them on a Tuesday and Thursday and implementing it on match day.

“It’s obviously a fantastic start to the season but we’ve been far from perfect, so there’s still a lot to work on at training.

“Huge congratulations to the 2nd XV who ground out a win away to Wirral, which is never an easy place to go.

“It was another great day for the club with all three teams bringing home wins - there was a real buzz at the club which was awesome to witness and be a part of.”

Warrington top the Counties 2 Lancashire and Cheshire Division on points difference after thrashing Leigh 61-14 at Grappenhall Sports Club.

The hosts ran in nine tries in all, two of which were penalty tries, as they dominated from start to finish.

The damage was done before half-time as Warrington went into the break 40-7 up thanks to tries from James Hartil, Chris White, Josh Downes, Matt Bullock and Luke Turner as well as the first of the penalty tries, with JP Hudson converting all bar one.

Oli Hudson and Will Morgan then crossed after the break, with Hudson converting both, with the other penalty score taking the hosts past 60.

Warrington are back at home again on Saturday as they host Tyldesley.
