Anthony Edwards Exchanged Friendly Smack Talk with U.S. Table Tennis Team — Then Cheered Them on in the Crowd
Edwards and the women's table tennis team are now each other's biggest fans
Anthony Edwards is taking on side quests while at the Olympics to cheer on his fellow Team USA athletes.
The basketball star, who helped Team USA defeat Serbia in their first game of the 2024 Olympics, was spotted in the crowd at the South Paris Arena on July 29 to watch America's Lily Zhang expertly defeat her Brazilian competitor in women's singles table tennis.
The moment came about after Edwards was seen in a video with Stephen Curry talking to the U.S. women's table tennis team while aboard the Team USA boat during the opening ceremony.
"I got some people talking about they're gonna beat me in ping pong 21-0," Edwards, 22, says in the clip while talking to the women. He argues, "I don't believe it, I don't believe it. I'm not having it. 11-0."
He then tells the athletes, "I'm scoring one point, one point I'm scoring."
It's unclear if Edwards has taken the table tennis challenge yet, but he did watch Zhang score some points.
Zhang, 28, breezed through the round of 32 for women's table tennis. Next, she'll compete in the women's singles quarterfinal, which kick off on Thursday, Aug. 1.
Zhang is joined by Amy Wang and Rachel Sung representing the women in table tennis.
Meanwhile, Edwards and the men's team play again on Wednesday, July 31 against South Sudan at Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille.
This Games is Edwards' first on the decorated U.S. men's team. The men have won 16 gold medals throughout basketball's history in the Olympics, and were the victors at the last four Games.
