Arne Slot avoided Erik ten Hag mistake at Man Utd - much to Liverpool's relief
Liverpool avoided a major mistake made by Erik ten Hag and Manchester United, according to legendary Dutch midfielder Ruud Gullit.
Back in 2022, United announced Ten Hag would become their new manager following a tumultuous 2021/22 season. The Dutchman helped guide United back into the top four, and also to Wembley glory after they beat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
Things were looking up for United - but the success of the 2022/23 season was a false dawn. They endured a dismal campaign last term, with Ten Hag then sacked in October following a terrible start to the new Premier League.
There were a number of reasons that Ten Hag's time at Old Trafford didn't work out, but of the major ones was poor recruitment - partly due to the Dutchman's preference for signing players he had previously worked with at Ajax - or against in the Eredivisie in the case of Tyrell Malacia.
Under the former United boss, they signed ex-Ajax stars Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Andre Onana, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui. While Mazraoui was relatively cheap in today's market, they forked out massive money for the other four, who have all underwhelmed. And Gullit reckons Liverpool has avoided a bullet by not signing players Arne Slot had previously worked with at Feyenoord, unlike Ten Hag.
"The biggest mistake, and we warned him, don't take players from Ajax to the Premier League," said Gullit. "It's not the same. What does he [Ten Hag] do? He does the same. Van Gaal did the same thing. He bought [Memphis] Depay, never did the same kind of thing.
"He [Ten Hag] brought [Tyrell] Malacia in [from Feyenoord], he brought in a lot of players that didn't contribute in the Premier League."
Gullit continued: "I get it, I get it. You are used to seeing these players every day and you think you know them. You think 'he can do it as well' but that is not the case, especially when you go to the Premier League. It's a different way. It's faster. It's more intense. Therefore, it is very difficult. We warned him, don't do it. He did it again and here you go and that's what it is. It's a pity."
He added: "I still say that Ten Hag is a good coach. But I think he underestimated the task at Man United."
Liverpool.com says: "There's no doubt about it, Ten Hag's Ajax signings for Manchester United really let him down. During his time in charge at United, the Dutchman brought in Lisandro Martinez, Antony, Andre Onana, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui, all of whom he had worked with previously at Ajax.
"While it would be a bit unfair to criticize De Ligt due to having only been at the club for a short period, and while it looks as though Mazraoui was actually an astute signing, both Martinez and Antony have been major disappointments. Martinez has battled injury issues, while Antony might be the worst signing of all time given his huge $95.2 million transfer fee.
"What makes Ten Hag's decision to sign Antony for United even weirder is he also coached Mohammed Kudus whilst at Ajax - a player who looks to be twice that of the Brazilian."
