Liverpool continued their impressive start to the season with a hard-earned League Cup win at Brighton on Wednesday evening. Cody Gakpo netted twice before Luis Diaz scored what was ultimately the decider as a much-changed Reds held on for a 3-2 triumph.

The result has moved Arne Slot on to 12 wins in 14 games as Anfield boss in all competitions with Liverpool still on course to defend the trophy they won at Wembley back in February.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at the Amex Stadium...

Something kinda ooh for Slot

If there's one sign Arne Slot is becoming more comfortable on the touchline it is his increasingly animated responses as the game unfolds. And Wednesday was no different.

With Liverpool on the attack early in the first half, Wataru Endo attempted to thread a throughball into the area for Cody Gakpo only for a Brighton boot to cut out the pass at the last moment.

Cue Slot putting his head to his hands before turning to the bench and offering a little 'ooh' in response to a near-chance for his team. Maybe next time, Wata.

Van Dijk directs

Virgil van Dijk was given a rare evening off as he remained an unused substitute at Brighton. But that didn't stop him directing the Liverpool defence.

Andy Robertson was skipper for the evening but, during a break in play in the first half when home player Ferdi Kadioglu received treatment, he wandered over to the bench.

From there, he was given some defensive instructions by Van Dijk before trotting back into his left-back position.

Nyoni rescued

Wednesday saw another big moment in the burgeoning career of 17-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni, who made his second appearance for Liverpool as a substitute midway through the second half. But it very nearly was a source of embarrassment for the youngster.

As he prepared on the touchline for his arrival, it swiftly emerged rather than his own jersey, he had pulled on the shirt of 18-year-old forward Ranel Young who had been included in the matchday squad for the first time.

Only when a smiling Van Dijk spotted the error was Nyoni able to then enter the field wearing the right attire. Cue much merriment in the Liverpool dugout.

Nunez celebrated

The League Cup is often a chance for the next generation of supporters to take in a match. And that was certainly the case for three excited Brighton fans who, during the half-time break, were keen to grab the attention of Darwin Nunez as he prepared for his warm-ups.

After his name was shouted an interminable number of times, the Liverpool striker spotted his admirers and gave them a wink before trotting on to the pitch.

Meanwhile, during the warm-downs after the game, Ibrahima Konate responded to his chant from a handful of away end stragglers with a friendly wave. Politeness will always win out.
