Liverpool's outgoing manager Jürgen Klopp has more or less stayed out of matters relating to his successor. He has stressed from the start that he will not be involved in the selection process, and has been reluctant to pass on any advice.

Klopp did give his seal of approval to Arne Slot once it became apparent that the Feyenoord boss was overwhelmingly likely to be appointed. But he is as eager as anyone to ensure Liverpool can genuinely begin a new era, without being anchored by the past — Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United being the obvious cautionary tale.

Given his back-seat approach, the one message that Klopp has sent to his successor takes on even more significance. Long before Slot had emerged as the man for the job, the current Liverpool boss implored whoever followed him to heed one warning.

"We said a couple of times that the future doesn't look that bad,” said Klopp after the Carabao Cup final triumph. “Don't forget it when the transfer window opens that there are a couple of pretty promising players already here. Don't close the door on them with 12 signings."

Slot may not actually have the final say on that, with Liverpool's recruitment department majorly restructured ahead of the new season. Michael Edwards has returned to the FSG fold, appointing Richard Hughes as sporting director, with Julian Ward rejoining the operation too.

But Slot would certainly do well to remember the wealth of talent already at the club. And there are promising signs on that front, given that he has just sounded a similar warning to his Feyenoord replacement.

“When I left AZ, you saw the same football there as before during the first half of the season. But is that hopeful?" Slot wondered, via Soccer News. "In my opinion, Feyenoord should mainly ensure that as few players leave as possible. Then many players will be able to do this with their eyes closed for the next six months."

Much like Klopp, it seems Slot is eager to stress the benefits of continuity to whoever comes after him. Ahead of his Liverpool arrival, it's an interesting insight into his thinking.

Liverpool.com says: Slot will undoubtedly want to put his own stamp on this Liverpool squad sooner or later, but it sounds as though he will almost want the side to run on autopilot for the first few months. Given their existing level, it makes sense not to come in and make wholesale alterations.

That probably means he won't be looking to make sweeping changes in the transfer market, even if it won't be entirely up to him. Klopp was right to issue a reminder of all the young talent at the club, and plenty of the solutions for Slot can be found from within.
