Former England striker Darren Bent believes there is only one player who can replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool — Kylian Mbappé. Salah's future is the source of much speculation, with his current deal expiring at the end of next season.

Salah will be 33 at that point but Saudi Pro League clubs are expected to test Liverpool's resolve again this summer after failed attempts to sign the Egyptian a year ago. The Athletic reports Liverpool is planning on Salah being part of its squad for next season at this stage.

That situation could of course change once the transfer window opens and Bent believes Mbappé would be the ideal replacement. The France captain is out of contract with PSG this summer and looks set to leave on a free transfer.

It was reported by BBC Sport that Mbappé had agreed to join Real Madrid back in February but there has been no announcement from either club. He remains keen to avoid talking about his next move too. The France captain rolled his eyes when asked about Real Madrid's fortunes in the Champions League final, following PSG's defeat to Borussia Dortmund this week.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Bent said: "Imagine you are trying to appease the Liverpool fans by going ‘listen, you are going to lose Salah, but Mbappé is coming. I still think Mbappé is the best player on the planet. He is incredible. That would work, if Salah went and he came in.

"I almost feel like that’s what Liverpool needs and he is versatile. He can play down the middle. Liverpool has a number of attacking players at the club that are versatile.”

Liverpool has been linked with Mbappé for some time, having met with the player back in 2017 when he was still at Monaco. The 25-year-old also spoke to the Reds before signing a new deal with PSG two years ago.

We talked a little bit, but not too much," Mbappé told The Daily Telegraph. "I talked to Liverpool because it's the favorite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don't know why, you will have to ask her. It's a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It's a big club."

Despite Mbappé being available on a free, any transfer will be a costly one. He is reportedly demanding a salary of around $81m (£65m/€75m) after tax, alongside a significant signing-on fee. says: If Liverpool was to lose Salah then there is no doubt that Mbappé would be the perfect replacement. But it appears that he is on his way to Real Madrid. Even if he is available, those figures are extortionate and would shatter Liverpool's wage structure. You would expect Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes to have more realistic targets in mind, with or without Salah.
