Arsenal have dropped off the pace in the Premier League title race. Defeat to Bournemouth was followed by a draw with Liverpool and another defeat to Newcastle United.

Just one point from their last three matches has seen the Gunners slip to fifth in the table. they are five points behind Manchester City - who themselves suffered defeat last time out to Bournemouth - and seven points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

With just over a quarter of the season gone, things are starting to take shape in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta will be expecting his team to bounce back, however, and move back onto the heels of the leaders as the campaign continues.

Many would have expected Arne Slot to take time to bed in at Anfield, having replaced Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool hotseat this summer. However, he has got his messages and his philosophy across very quickly indeed, with just one defeat in those ten matches so far.

Slot won the Eredivisie title in his second season at Feyenoord in 2022/23, but had to settle for runners-up spot last time out before he left for Liverpool, finishing second behind PSV Eindhoven last season.

And what happened last season may be of interest to Arsenal supporters, and could offer a little boost to the Gunners in the title race.

Slot's Feyenoord started last season in fine form, just like Liverpool have done this year. Feyenoord were unbeaten in their first nine games, winning seven and drawing two - scoring 32 goals and conceding six in the process.

Liverpool have eight wins, one draw and one defeat from their first 10 games this season, scoring 19 and conceding six.

But after nine games, Feyenoord had a slight wobble, which may well have cost them the Eredivisie crown in the end. they lost two of the next five matches - one to eventual champions PSV - and then followed that with two home draws in the proceeding five matches.

They were never top of the table at any point, but it was after nine games where they started to falter slightly, before picking things up again in the final 15 games of the season, when they went unbeaten with 13 wins and two draws.

If a similar pattern happens at Anfield, now would be the time for Arsenal to capitalise on a Liverpool stutter, with the Gunners having already had their stumble in the last few weeks.
