Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has claimed youngster Chido Obi-Martin made the decision to leave Arsenal in the summer because of the nature they were overseeing his development.

The Manchester Evening News first reported in July that United were hopeful of agreeing a deal to sign the talented Danish international, 17, who had enjoyed a prolific run in front of goal in Arsenal's academy.

The deal was officially rubber-stamped by the Premier League in September and he made his debut for United's Under-18s on October 19, appearing as a second half substitute in their 4-3 victory away at Sunderland.

He made his first start for the Reds the following weekend, scoring a 14-minute hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Carrington. He has since added another two goals to his tally, meaning he has scored five goals in his first five appearances for the Under-18s.

United are confident Obi-Martin has first-team potential, meaning the transfer was considered as something of a coup. Under Ineos, United have stepped up their hunt for eye-catching talent, as highlighted by the addition of Sekou Kone in August.

And in the opinion of former United goal-getter Cole, Obi-Martin left Arsenal because they 'weren't prepared' to fast-track his progress.

Cole, speaking to Betfred, said: "I know somebody that worked with Chido Obi-Martin at Arsenal and I've been told that he has a bright future ahead of him.

"I've heard he's a confident individual and very talented, but fingers crossed he gets his head down and performs, because if things go as they're expected for him, you could see him in the Manchester United first team in a few years.

"One of the reasons why he left Arsenal was because they weren't prepared to fast-track him as quickly as he wanted. We just have to wait and see, but I've heard he's a really good talent with an eye for goal."
