Barry Ferguson believes Jordan Henderson is a 'perfect' fit for Rangers and reckons an ambitious move for the former Liverpool star could be just what the doctor ordered to get the club back to where they need to be.

Pressure has ramped up on Philippe Clement's position in the dugout after Wednesday night's 2-1 loss to Aberdeen at Pittodrie, a result that has seen the high-flying Dons move nine points clear of Rangers in second place behind Celtic. Ibrox diehards are holding another inquest, with manager Clement not the only one who some supporters have had enough of.

But former skipper and Record Sport columnist Ferguson has a plan to get the Gers flying again - and it involves tempting ex Liverpool star Henderson to Govan. The Premier League and Champions League winner has endured a difficult spell at Ajax after returning to Europe last January following his brief stint with Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

Henderson's first six months in Amsterdam ended with the side's dismal slump to a fifth place finish in the Eredivisie, which was their worst league performance for 24 years. New manager Francesco Farioli has started to turn things around with some decent results on the domestic scene and in Europe but it remains to be seen just how much of a role 82-time England cap Henderson will play for the Dutch giants going forward.

Ferguson believes the 34-year-old's vast experience will be integral in the Ibrox dressing room and that he would improve the team's younger players in midfield tenfold. Speaking to gambling.com, he said: "I think he would be perfect, Jordan Henderson. Obviously it's not worked out at Ajax since he left Saudi Arabia. I think somebody like Jordan Henderson, with the experience he's got, would more than bring on the three players that I've mentioned (Connor Barron, Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande).

"Because they're three good young players in my opinion, I just think they need a bit of a helping hand. Not just in training, but I'm talking about when you're on a pitch. I just think somebody with his experience would certainly bring those players on."
