Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer given first EVER red card in 866-game career after crashing into former Celtic star
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off for the first time in his 866-match career after crashing into a fromer Celtic star.
The incident happened in the 18th minute of the Bavarian's hotly contested German Cup last-16 tie at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. Manager Vincent Kompany watched on in despair as the 38-year-old rushed out of his box and missed the ball completely before clattering into former Hoops full-back Jeremie Frimpong. Neuer offered little complaint after the red card was brandished and quickly departed for an early shower, leaving his team with 10 men for over 70 minutes.
Frimpong, who spent 16 months at Parkhead, continued to be one of the best performers on the pitch as his team went on to win 1-0 thanks to a second-half strike from former Burnley man Nathan Tella, who used to play under Kompany. The 23-year-old Dutchman was also a key figure in helping Xabi Alonso's Die Werkself clinch the 2024 Bundesliga and German Cup unbeaten.
The result puts further pressure on Manchester City legend Kompany and the aging Neuer, who has also only received 23 yellow cards in during his career. Astonishingly all his bookings have come at club level, with the 2014 World Cup-winning goalkeeper NEVER cautioned during his 124-game international career.
Speaking after the match, Neuer apologised for his actions and admitted he had apologised to both teams for his rash challenge that was deservedly punished. He told Sky Germany: "It was decisive for the game. It hurts us and I'm sorry. I've apologised to the team. I was still hoping for an offside in the situation. I can't change it now. It was a mistake and I have to accept it. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about it."
