Ruud van Nistelrooy is calm about his future beyond his final game as Manchester United's caretaker manager and hopeful that no news is good news regarding his chances of staying on at Old Trafford.

The 48-year-old will be looking to end his two-week stint in charge of first-team affairs with a third win in four matches against Leicester City on Sunday, but he is still unsure whether that game will be a farewell.

Van Nistelrooy stepped up to take charge following the dimissal of Erik ten Hag and has made no secret of his desire to stay on under Ruben Amorim, with the Portuguese taking over as head coach on Monday.

Amorim will take charge of his final Sporting game on Sunday evening, but he is set to begin work at Carrington on Monday, and Van Nistelrooy hopes to meet the 39-year-old then.

The duo have yet to speak, with Amorim focused on finishing his time in charge of Sporting on a high, while Van Nistelrooy has put it all into his role at United, but the club's former striker would like to be part of the new-look staff.

Amorim is finalising the backroom additions that will move with him to United from Sporting, but Van Nistelrooy, appointed assistant manager by Ten Hag in the summer, is keen to remain in place and see out his two-year contract on the coaching staff.

As things stand, Van Nistelrooy will report to Carrington on Monday, and talks with Amorim will encompass a handover of power and discussions over his own future. Having heard nothing to the contrary, he is taking that as a positive sign.

“Let’s wait and see how that goes. I am calm to be fair, I am trusting the process," he said. "I believe the outcome will be good because I believe that as long as there is no news, I am here at Manchester United, so that is my focus.

"I am calm in that sense and whenever the communication will take place, I will see. But obviously we know what the timeframes are so I am aware of that and for me it is tomorrow’s training session and Sunday two o’clock is the only thing that is on my mind to be fair."

Van Nistelrooy has so far overseen wins against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup and PAOK in the Europa League, as well as last weekend's Premier League draw with Chelsea. He has lifted spirits inside the dressing room since his promotion and has made an impact on the first-team squad.
