Ben Foster has been hilariously mocked over a footwear gaffe he suffered at Wrexham after laying into Chelsea star Marc Cucurella.

The former Premier League goalkeeper slammed Cucurella's actions as "pathetic" after he cost his side two early goals in their 4-3 win at Tottenham on Sunday.

The Spanish defender suffered a torrid evening, slipping over twice to concede possession to Spurs, who took full advantage.

Cucurella later blamed his boots for the errors and was seen at one stage removing them on the sidelines, before sharing a picture of them in a bin on Instagram.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster accused the full-back of throwing Chelsea's kitman under the bus after appearing to point the finger at him for the debacle.

The 41-year-old said: “It was a bit pathetic and a bit theatrical. It’s the disrespect of the kitman, because that guy is being made to look a fool like it's his fault.

“Everybody knows that kitmen are like the hub within football, they are the heartbeat. They do anything for everyone in that football club.

“Everybody loves them and absolutely buzzes off them so for him to do that on the pitch is bang out of order.”

However, Foster was quickly reminded of his own footwear mix-up at Wrexham after being joined to discuss the Chelsea game by former team-mate Ben Tozer.

The ex-Red Dragons captain revealed the goalkeeper forgot to bring his boots for the final game of the club's 2022/23 National League title-winning season.

It meant he ended up wearing Tozer's boots, decorated with pictures of his children, for the match at Torquay instead.

The defender, who now plays for Forest Green Rovers, said: “We’d just won the league. We went away to Torquay United for the last game of the season, and someone forgot their boots.

“Talk about taking your foot off the gas. We must have been out celebrating Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.”

The game finished in a 1-1 draw as Wrexham ended the season with a record-breaking 111 points, but Foster admitted his forgetfulness could have been costly after hitting several wayward goal kicks.

He said: “In my defence, I've spent my career in the Premier League where the boot man takes your boots for you.

“When you play for Wrexham and you're in the National League, you are responsible for getting your own boots, and either taking them yourself or putting them in the skip.

“If you haven't done that, then they are not getting taken. For some reason it just totally slipped my mind. I was banana-footing everything.”
