Albion Rovers saw their nine-game unbeaten run come to an end at Berwick Rangers on Saturday, but boss Sandy Clark says it was always going to happen at some stage.

Rovers lost 2-0 at Berwick, who had a late penalty saved by Ross Connelly, and Clark said his side didn’t do enough to merit something from the trip to England.

He said: “It was a game where we didn’t deserve to get anything. We started alright, but without getting any real shots on goal. We had some good periods of possession, going forward, didn’t make it count, and lost a really poor goal, a bit freakish, and then lost our way until half-time.

“We started the second half the more dominant team and tried to get back in it, but then lost a second goal halfway through from a free kick.

“After that Berwick were better than us, they had more about them to make sure they held onto their lead, and we were never going to get anything.

“We had 90 minutes without a shot on goal, which was really not like us.

“But after going nine games in the league without losing, I suppose the law of averages meant it was going to happen, because it’s such a tight league.

“I’m disappointed, but it happens. They had more about them, got the first goal, and that was a crucial part of the match.

“I’m not counting the penalty save as a positive. At that point we weren’t going to get in the game anyway.

“We tried changing personnel, and shape, but never got a grip of the game after we went 2-0 down, and I’m glad we didn’t go 3-0 down because that looks a lot worse, but the save was irrelevant. There wasn’t a lot to take from the game.”

Rovers are seventh in the Lowland League as they prepare for their next league game against Celtic ‘B’ at Airdrie’s New Broomfield a week on Friday, with a South Challenge Cup third round clash away to Shotts to come this weekend.

Clark said: “We are where we are, it’s a difficult league, and I know we’re capable of beating anybody, but we have down days like Saturday.

“We’ll keep plugging away, keep going, and see where we get to. It’s hard to go nine games without defeat in this league, and you always have a chance to make up for it.

“It’s a fortnight before we play another league game, so we’ve got a chance to make up for it when we go and play Celtic.

“It will be a really difficult game on a big pitch at Airdrie, which suits Celtic with their young, fit, quick players and that makes them really dangerous opposition.

“The thing in our favour is that we’re a bit older than them and should be better than them at the physical side of the game.”
