Best start to a season at home for 93 years
Watford have made their best start to a season at home for 93 years.
The eight wins and a draw achieved in league and cup games so far is the best since the 1931/32 season when Watford won all of their first nine at home – a feat also achieved in 1899/00 and 1903/04.
Graham Taylor clocked up eight wins and a defeat in his first nine home games in the 1977/78 season and, when the Hornets finished second in their first top-flight campaign in 1982/83, they won seven and draw two of their first nine home games.
With nine wins and four draws in his first 13 home fixtures, Cleverley has made the fourth best start at home to a Watford managerial career.
John Goodall (13 wins), Xisco Munoz (12 wins and a defeat) and Taylor (11 wins, a draw and a defeat) are the only three to better Cleverley – although only Goodall matched his unbeaten start.
Cleverley sits joint eighth in the table of winning games ratio in the first 27 matches among all-time Watford managers.
His 12 victories give him a success rate of 44.4%, the same as both Aidy Boothroyd and Kenny Jackett.
Goodall, who oversaw much success in the early 1900s, won 88.9% of his first 27 games, and second in the list is the legendary Taylor, who won 19 of his first 27 matches.
Incredibly, with a 51.8% win rate, Gianluca Vialli sits fifth in the all-time list.
The Italian won 14 of his first 27 games, but then the season fell off a cliff and he won only six of the remaining 25.
This is the 120th time in Watford history they have gone 13 games unbeaten at home, the most recent being between October 12, 1996 and February 11, 1997.
There has been only one draw in the first 18 league and cup games, which hasn’t happened since the start of the 2021/22 campaign.
The 25-point haul from the first 15 league games is the joint 21st highest Watford have achieved.
The best was 39 points at the beginning of the 2000/01 campaign under Taylor, when they won 12 and drew the other three of their first 15 league fixtures.
Sadly, they won just eight of the remaining 31 and Taylor retired at the end of the season.
Watford have conceded only four goals in their first seven home league games so far, a figure bettered only four times in the club’s history: 1968/69 (1 goal), 2001/01 (2), 1966/67 (2) and 1982/83 (3).
