The big Celtic question mark which TV pundits 'missed' as hype builds over ex Hoops prodigy - Parkhead news roundup
Cameron Carter-Vickers made his latest injury return as Celtic ran out comfortable winners at Motherwell - but there's one 'question mark' over who will stand beside him.
The former Tottenham defender is widely regarded as the Hoops' best stopper amongst supporters, pundits and ex-pros and seeing him back out on the grass at Fir Park will have handed all associated with the club a real big boost. The USA international has missed some important matches in recent weeks including the 2-2 draw with Aberdeen at Parkhead in the top of the table Premiership clash while he also didn't travel for the defensive masterclass in Bergamo as the Scottish champions claimed what could prove to be a priceless point on the road at Atalanta in the Champions League after a 0-0 stalemate.
Auston Trusty and Liam Scales earned rave reviews from that night in Italy and the duo retained their spots at the heart of the backline at the weekend, with Carter-Vickers named on the bench. He did make his comeback in the 68th minute to replace Alex Valle with Scales moving to the left-back role for his Hoops pal to join Trusty in front of Kasper Schmeichel.
Going forward the question will be who partners Carter-Vickers at centre-half with Valle impressing on the left in the absence of Greg Taylor - who was also fit enough for the bench. As the duo continue to ramp up their fitness the big question will edge closer for Rodgers but Hoops legend Pat Bonner has only one answer.
He told BBC Sportsound: “The other question mark, and they didn’t raise it in commentary, is, who will he put alongside Carter-Vickers if he gets himself back fit? Will it be Trusty, or will it be Scales on that left-hand side?
“Scales went to left-back in this game when Carter-Vickers came on; Trusty went to the left-hand side, so that will be a big decision because Scales has been magnificent over the piece. If he loses out, he will be very disappointed, I’m sure.”
He added: “Listen, I would go with him (Scales). I think he’s done exceptionally well, and Trusty will just have to wait if Carter-Vickers goes automatically into the team, but Trusty did well in midweek because it was a different type of game.
“He’s big, he’s tall, he handled everything in the air that was thrown in there, but I still think I would give it to Scales even though I’m a wee bit biased because he’s Irish! I want him to play and continue to play and develop. His form has been magnificent, and that’s why I think he should be in.”
Meanwhile, Celtic head back to Hampden this weekend as the face Aberdeen in a blockbuster Premier Sports Cup semi-final. There is nothing between the sides in the Premiership standings at present and the first meeting between the two delivered a 2-2 classic.
They are set to do it all again at the national stadium this weekend with a spot in the final up for grabs. And ahead of the showdown the match officials for the game have been revealed.
Kevin Clancy will be the man in the middle in Mount Florida with Frank Connor and Daniel McFarlane running the lines. Andrew Dallas will be the man in the VAR hot seat and he will be assisted by John McCrossan.
Elsewhere, Ben Doak has earned further reviews for his impact at Middlesbrough. He gave Norwich City defender Callum Doyle a torrid time at Carrow Road before he was replaced and the home side hit back to draw 3-3. Boro missed the chance to go 4-1 up from the spot with the score at 3-1 when he left the field.
Asked about the struggles of his player Doyle and the influence of Scotland international and former Celtic kid Doak - on loan at Middlesbrough from EPL giants Liverpool - Johannes Hoff Thorup said: “He’s not the only one this season to have some difficult moments against him. That’s just how it is. We knew today we had to try and support him as much as possible and have as many situations two-vs-one as possible. But we also didn't want to sacrifice our attack too much. It was about trying to find that balance."
