Mike Williamson hopes the “energy and emotion” of a packed away end can help Carlisle United at Salford City today.

A sell-out travelling Blue Army will head to the Peninsula Stadium for United’s latest attempt to boost their League Two prospects (kick-off 12.30pm).

The clash, which is televised live on Sky Sports+, offers Carlisle the chance to pick up some much-needed points in their battle to get out of trouble at the wrong end of the table

Head coach Williamson says the 1,300+ sell-out is the latest impressive example of support from United’s faithful at a time of struggle in the league.

“That just shows you the nature of this football club and, in the present situation, still the nature of the fans to come and support,” he said.

“You could feel it last Saturday [in the FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic] – even when we went one down, and even at the end of the game, you could hear their support and you could feel that energy coming on from the stands to the boys.

“That was hugely appreciated because, when you're in a tough moment, no-one goes out there looking to give 60 per cent, 70 per cent.

“The fans have given us everything and they will continue. The away support has been incredible. Any energy, any emotion that comes along, we've just got to channel it.”

Second-bottom Carlisle are seeking a first win in ten games in all competitions, and a first victory in eight in the league.

Three points could make a positive dent in the four-point gap to the safety line.

But a third straight league defeat would deepen their problems and take them just one game short of last season’s longest winless league run.

Williamson has been weighing up whether to stick with Gabe Breeze in goal over Harry Lewis after the Cumbrian impressed against Wigan, while Callum Guy is a strong contender to come back in for the suspended Ethan Robson. United had been hoping to include new signing Kadeem Harris in the squad but have yet to confirm whether international clearance has been received for the former Sheffield Wednesday man.

“When we're on top and we're in a good period of the game, we've got to really try and punish and capitalise, be ruthless,” added Williamson.

“And then, which is going to happen, we're going to suffer a little bit – and we've got to get behind the ball and show that resilience that we did against Wigan.

“And we've got to use the crowd as best as we possibly can to urge the boys to give as much fight.

“That translates into winning first contacts, picking up second balls, being disciplined in our distances. And then when we turn it over and we can hurt the opposition.”
