Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:35

Fabian Hurtzeler makes it two wins out of two for Brighton. The German's first home game in charge sees Manchester United flee north with their tails between their legs. Welbeck gave his side the lead with an easy stab home after a Maguire failed to deal with a Joao Pedro cross from the right. Mitoma kept it alive and squared excellently. Rashford thought he had given his side an instant response, yet his goal was chalked off for offside. In the second half, Diallo pulled a deflected goal back for the visitors on the hour, before an injection of fresh subs saw United step up the pressure. Smart link up between Fernandes and Diallo saw the former square for Garnacho to tap home. However, with it hitting an offside Zirkzee on the goal line, it was ultimately disallowed. Brighton kept pushing with inspired changes of their own, and Adingra was a key component. He arrived to the second phase of a late corner to float one over for Joao Pedro to emphatically head home two minutes before time. United operated at an xG of 1.41, while the hosts worked up an xG of 2.12. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, goodbye!

Well, he can hit them! It's Enciso! He cuts back in from the left side and powers one from range. Yet, it's just too high. Great offensive play though. Adingra comes forward and De Ligt is forced to put the ball behind on the right. Late corner.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:23

Brighton have a free-kick on the left. They wanted it taken quickly, yet Craig Pawson makes them wait. It's whipped in and cleared.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:18

Brighton break and Joao Pedro has Enciso, Mitoma and Minteh ahead of him. He opts for Minteh, yet the young Gambian's pass is poor and goes straight to Onana.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:17

The corner is quite a flat delivery. Brighton head clear. Gilmour then finds Minteh on the right before Baleba tries to slip in unnoticed. However, the United defence are equal to it.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:14

Garnacho crosses from the left, and it's deflected behind. They'll now have a corner on the left in front of their travelling fans.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:13

The first set-piece is flicked on by the Red Devila' defence and Gilmour takes a corner from the left now. Onana punches clear with power.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:13

Mazraoui is nearly disposessed, yet is fouled and can breathe a sigh of relief. Onana then slides out after Minteh presses high. There's a few penalty grumbles from the crowd, yet it's only a corner.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:08

Goalscorer Welbeck makes way for Julio Enciso. The Paraguayan missed a lot of last term through injury. What can he bring to this game?

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:08

Substitution Jacob Harry Maguire Matthijs de Ligt

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:08

Gilmour fires the free-kick straight into the United wall. He gets it back and pushes it wide to Hinshelwood who crosses, yet to no avail.

Yellow Card Kobbie Boateng Mainoo

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:05

Diallo catches Welbeck on the edge of the United box. It's a poor sliding challenge, and not only is it a dangerous position for a free-kick, Diallo is now in the book for his efforts.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:03

Garnacho taps home to flip this game on its head after Fernandes squares following a superb overlap move with Diallo on the right. However, after hitting Zirkzee on the way in, the Dutchman was offside! It's chalked off. That's a tight decision!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

14:01

Substitution James Philip Milner Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:59

Goal Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:58

United enjoy a solid stint with the ball, yet their movement up the pitch falters at the last minute as they seemingly revert to type. The final ball from the left is pulled too far back and misses everyone.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:56

Garnacho already links up well since his emergence from the bench. Casemiro latches on to a short pass from the Argentinian and fires on goal - yet it's way too high from the former Real Madrid man.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:54

Rashford's race is run. Perhaps not his day, Alejandro Garnacho arrives in his place.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:54

Diallo has scored just his second Premier League goal, after netting in a victory for Manchester United against Newcastle in May this year.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:54

After that goal, the United fans have seemed to have woken up. Even better, the pace of Alejandro Garnacho is primed to come off the bench.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:49

Assist Noussair Mazraoui

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:48

Milner has put in a timeless performance so far. He gets high up the left and robs the ball off Diallo. Diallo then proceeds to get a good handful of shirt and it's a well-earned free-kick from the veteran. The free-kick comes in and Welbeck smashes a header off the bar!

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:47

A delayed offside flag frustrates United fans as Fernandes links up with Rashford. Regardless, the hooked effort from the Englishman was poor either way.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:45

Brighton build back up the pitch and Minteh crosses nicely for Welbeck, yet the experienced forward can only head straight at Onana.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:45

A long, direct ball from United slices through the Seagulls. Fernandes plays it left to Zirkzee who can give it back. Unfortunately for the Portuguese, the ball is at an awkward height and he thighs it towards the welcoming arms of Steele.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:43

Milner flies forward and nearly prods it home! Joao Pedro slots in the experienced number six in the left inside channel, and he flicks it round the onrushing Onana. However, United can get it out from the goal line.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:41

Minteh continues Brighton's direct approach by driving at Dalot on the right. The defender deals with him well and Milner's eventual corner is put clear.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:40

In the first half, Manchester United had a shooting accuracy (excluding blocks) of 20%. The last time they posted a lower percentage in a Premier League game was against Crystal Palace in March 2021 (14.3%). Improvement required.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:36

Brighton come flying out of the blocks here, and Milner ends up taking a speculative effort from range. It swirls high and wide of Onana's goal.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:36

We're back in action at the Amex.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:34

Substitution Mason Tony Mount Joshua Orobosa Zirkzee

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:31

The first half wasn't exactly a classic, yet there's hope that United may come out swinging in the second period. Fernandes and Mount showed solid enterprise at times on the left, yet apart from the disallowed goal, the final, decisive moment has been missing so far for Erik ten Hag's side. As such, their xG has been a lowly 0.36, in comparison to their host Brighton's slightly higher 0.83. United have a tough task on their hands here if they want to get something from this game. In fact, they are winless in their last 16 away Premier League matches when trailing at half time (D3 L13). This has stemmed from a 3-1 victory at Aston Villa in May 2021. On the other hand, Brighton have lost just one of their last 35 Premier League games when leading at half time (W28 D6), losing 2-1 at Tottenham in February this year. It'll be predominantly about game management for Fabian Hurzeler's side no doubt, with an insurance goal being ideal.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:26

Brighton lead 1-0 at the break at a rainy Amex, courtesy of Danny Welbeck's 100th career goal. Breaking out of a tense tussle in the opening exchanges, Brighton made the most of their limited opportunities, as well as some pretty lapse Manchester United defending. Joao Pedro crossed deep from the right, and it was allowed to curl across the face of goal. Mitoma kept it alive on the left, and played it square for a sliding Welbeck to tuck away rather easily past Onana in the 32nd minute for his second goal in as many games. United did look like they had an instant response through Marcus Rashford. However, the forward's close-range strike after some fine Jason Steele goalkeeping, was chalked off for offside.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:18

HALF-TIME: BRIGHTON 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:16

Brighton make the most of Mainoo's absence in the middle as he appeals for a foul just off the right touchline. Hinshelwood is played in down the left but can't pull it back effectively to Mitoma or Welbeck who were arriving.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:15

Brighton have gone 1-0 up in seven of their last nine Premier League games against Man Utd, while scoring first in six of their eight home games against the Red Devils.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:15

Joao Pedro plays Minteh on the right with a solid cross-field switch. The Gambian nutmegs Dalot, yet the defender continues to deal with the youngster well and United can eventually play it out from the back.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:13

Fernandes and Van Hecke battle brilliantly after a slide-rule pass goes in behind. The latter prevails as Fernandes is bodied. Rashford was down in the process of that move, yet is up and about after Fernandes crosses into a charging Steele, who claims excellently.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:11

United have looked quite flat today. Admittedly, they have won just one of their last 24 away Premier League matches when conceding first (D3 L20), defeating Everton 2-1 in October 2022. The second half looks to be a tricky task ahead.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:09

Fernandes runs forward and lays it back to Mount. The former Chelsea man strikes hard and low, yet Steele saves. The flag is up for Fernandes' earlier involvement, however.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:08

United push forward on the left and Mount looks to slot in a tantalising low ball for Rashford in the box. However, Van Hecke stretches and puts it behind. The Fernandes corner is long but Gilmour flicks it away regardless.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:07

Welbeck is the highest scoring player against Manchester United to have previously played for them in the competition, having scored five Premier League goals against the Red Devils. Brighton have lost just one of their last 28 home Premier League games when they have scored the opening goal (W21 D6), losing 1-2 against Aston Villa in November 2022.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:06

Right after Brighton's opener, United think they've got one back through Rashford! However, it's offside, and Steele's earlier superb save from the initial effort can be appreciated for its skill, rather than the rebound.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:04

Assist Kaoru Mitoma

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:03

Goal Daniel Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:03

United have a three on two... yet Diallo's pass from the left to Rashford is so poor on the break. What a waste. Nothing has really flowed well so far today, it must be said, and that epitomised the action so far.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

13:01

Rashford makes a good run off of Van Hecke, yet the Dutchman intercepts a smart ball over the top with his chest. Gilmour is then fouled in the next phase.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:58

United have worked the ball well down the left. Mount and Fernandes link up before the latter's ball is blocked behind by Veltman. Corner from the left, incoming. The corner goes short before Bruno's cross is nodded out by Van Hecke. Dalot then has a pot-shot from range and the Brighton play resets as it flies high of Steele's goal.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:57

Mitoma is nearly played in behind Dalot, yet the defender gets a great, sliding touch to deny the sneaky opportunity.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:55

Veltman and Fernandes scuffle for the ball on the left, and the Dutchman clearly handles the ball on the floor. United want a booking, but instead they only get a free-kick in a good position. Diallo crosses well and Casemiro heads just over.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:54

Steele plays the ball long and Welbeck gets it down before spreading the play to Minteh. Joao Pedro then receives the ball, yet Mainoo pulls out an excellent recovery challenge on the edge of his own box. United now look to rebuild.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:51

In a relatively tentative game so far, an intriguing stat has popped up. United's Fernandes has applied more pressures than any other player so far in this game (16).

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:50

United press high and Mainoo intercepts a pass from Gilmour. He charges at Van Hecke, yet can't get round the Dutchman and gets pushed to the left byline before Steele claims. Up the other end, Minteh botches a cross from the right. The final product really is missing for both teams so far.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:48

There's been an even share of possession so far. Which side will break out from the midfield mire?

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:46

Brighton try to stick a counter together. It's pushed up the pitch and Pedro looks to flick it to Minteh, yet United recover. In the next phase, Gilmour is fouled in the middle of the park and the hosts move into a steady spell of possession.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:46

Talk about longevity... When Milner made his Leeds United debut, his current boss Hurzeler was just nine years old.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:44

Amad! Dalot pulls out a superb cross from the left and Diallo should do better! He volleys his effort wide right of the target. That's the best chance of the game so far.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:42

Joao Pedro goes for a speculative effort from range but drags it right of the target. This arrived after Onana came out of his goal and was eventually dispossessed by Milner. Perhaps the Brazilian rushed it as the keeper recovered.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:40

United are sloppy in the middle of the park. A throw finds Casemiro and the Brazilian just nods it back out of play. Both sides are looking to fully wake up here.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:39

The corner comes in, van Hecke heads clear.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:38

Steele and Dunk are guilty of overplaying the ball at the back, and Dunk has given United a cheap corner on the left after being pressed. Fernandes will take.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:37

Minteh is energetic on the right and pokes a ball square, yet Onana claims with ease. The young Gambian went off against Everton with a head injury, but looks in fine fettle today. United get it up the other end and Fernandes crosses. Steele catches well, although Veltman looked to have a handful of Rashford's shirt there.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:34

Five of Brighton's starters today are actually older than their 31-year-old manager Hurzeler. He is the youngest permanent Premier League manager ever.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:33

United are just getting their formative touches of the ball with Onana and the defence having a keen share of possession.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:32

Off we go, United get proceedings underway.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:31

The players are led out by today's officials. They, themselves, are headed up by referee Craig Pawson. Both teams are out and the applause ripples around an overcast Amex. We have the toss between the two captains, and it looks like the visitors will get us started.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:27

According to the all-singing, all-dancing Opta supercomputer, today's probability percentages see Brighton likely to win at 41.2%. A draw sits at 24.8%, while a win for United comes in at a 34.0% chance. Today's slight underdog, Manchester United have won their opening away game in just one of the last six Premier League campaigns (D2 L3). That sole victory funnily enough, arrived at Brighton in 2020-21 (3-2). Can they get a repeat here?

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:27

Brighton have won four of their last five Premier League games against Manchester United, though did lose the most recent meeting. 2-0 at home on the final day of last season. Manchester United have lost 43% of their top-flight meetings with Brighton (six out of 14), their highest loss rate against a single opponent in the competition’s history. Will Fabian Hurzeler's open day momentum continue and transfer over to his first home game? Or, will Erik ten Hag's side give a better account than Everton did last week, and show the young German coach the true nature of the Premier League? Whatever the outcome, it's hopefully going to be an exciting, competitive affair.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United

12:18

Manchester United are unchanged from their victory over Fulham on the opening weekend, so goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee starts on the bench. There is no place in the matchday squad for Jadon Sancho, who has been linked with a move to Juventus, although there has so far been no bid. United have not win their opening two Premier League games since 2017.
