Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has explained how interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy brought the ‘joy’ back to training following the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

Van Nistelrooy ended his four match stint in interim charge of the club on a high on Sunday. Goals from Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho gave United a comfortable 3-0 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

It means that the Dutchman remains unbeaten with three wins and a draw from his four matches in charge. He will now hand over the reins to incoming manager Ruben Amorim.

Speaking after the win against Leicester, Fernandes, who has scored four goals and assisted a further two in the last four games, has explained how the interim boss approached training.

"It's been a big part, obviously, he felt that everyone was a little bit down," the captain told MUTV. "Results, everything that succeeded with the manager. He understood that the momentum of the players is not great. The mood was down, the confidence was down, so everything he did every day in training, it was trying to bring joy to the training.

"You know, like trying to bring smiles, trying to be involved, tried to make everyone enjoy it, and make it look a little bit loose, the training. And he brought a lot of energy from that, you know, he brought people fighting, training, running, trying duels and lots of small games, competitions, and that.

"Probably going forward, you needed to do more tactics and whatever," he added. "For him, in the moment, [it] was just he did it, to be honest, and the training has been really enjoyable. Everyone is feeling like they enjoying the training because he was just bringing that extra joy to the training.

"And I like [that], with small things with small games, just to bring the energy back. And he did it. He did it well. And we said it before the game, we don't know what's going to happen to Ruud and the rest of the staff.”

Van Nistelrooy’s future at Old Trafford still looks uncertain. The former striker has revealed that he will be told a final decision on if he stays or not on Monday.

"I appreciated the clear communication of the club, that it was interim for the short term," he said. "It could've been one or two games even, that was the first communication, and they kept me in the loop and said okay, it's gonna be four [games].

"For me, it is important to have that clarity and I appreciated that and in the end the most important thing is this football club, and I'm here to support that in my role.

"And, as I said, I want to continue doing that in the future and now also the communication was after the block of four games there will be communication towards you and your colleagues who are in an uncertain situation. And I expect to hear today or tomorrow."
