Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes sent a heartfelt message to Donny van de Beek after he confirmed his Old Trafford exit. The Dutch playmaker brought a premature end to his stint at Old Trafford moving in the direction of La Liga side, Girona.

Van de Beek joined United back in 2020 from Ajax for a hefty fee rumored to be around $45m (£35m/€42m). Despite having 62 appearances under his belt, he failed to truly impress the United fans during his four years at the club.

His move away signals the start of United's clear out in the upcoming transfer window, possibly including groundbreaking sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical guru Jason Wilcox.

Van de Beek had loan spells at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt but the 27-year-old has now secured a permanent exit. The deal could rise to an eventual fee of $17m (£13m/€15m).

He wrote in a post on social media: "Dear Manchester United family. Today is a memorable day as my adventure at the club comes to an end. I want to thank you all for your support throughout the years.

"From the moment we arrived at Manchester United, we felt extremely welcome and we are grateful for that. Thank you to everyone at the club for making us feel at home. A special thanks to all the fans that made these years unforgettable."

"Besides the football, the birth of our two children here ensures that Manchester will always have a special place in our hearts. Good luck to everybody, we'll meet again." Fernandes responded: "You deserve the best," alongside a red heart emoji.

Kobbie Mainoo joined in on the farewell to Van de Beek with a simple heart emoji. Others who paid included former Everton and Ajax midfielder Davvy Klaassen and ex-Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Liverpool.com says: Van de Beek arrived at Old Trafford with a decent reputation but his time in England simply hasn't worked out. His exit should act as a warning to Arne Slot about signing players from the Eredivisie for Liverpool with many struggling to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
