Bruno Guimaraes makes huge Arsenal January transfer decision after honest Mikel Arteta verdict

Arsenal were unable to break down Everton on Saturday afternoon which saw them drop points for the second consecutive Premier League game. Though the Gunners have drawn their last two Premier League games, leaders Liverpool have not extended the gap at the top.

Last weekend, Storm Darragh saw the Merseyside Derby against Everton postponed and this past Saturday, Arne Slot's side played out a thrilling score draw with Fulham. Arsenal meanwhile, continued the recent trend of struggling to create chances from open play with it clear they may need to sign a striker such as Alexander Isak.

Strengthening in midfield is also somewhat of a priority with the injury worries around Declan Rice exposing the lack of options that may still be at the club beyond next summer. With that in mind, football.london has taken a look at the latest Arsenal transfer news and rumours as the opening of the January window approaches.

Guimaraes Man City decision

Alongside Isak, Arsenal have also shown an interest in Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes but it could be Manchester City that he joins and perhaps even as soon as next month. According to the Times, the Brazil international would consider a mid-season switch to Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola looks for a solution to the absence of Rodri.

Given he has captained the Magpies frequently this season, it is highly unlikely Eddie Howe would allow him to depart for anything less than £80million.

football.london says: "If Guimaraes actually does move to Man City, it would arrive as quite the shock for Arsenal and the rest of the Premier League.

"Though Arteta signed Rice to play at the base of his midfield, he is often deployed as a No.8 which requires one of Thomas Partey or Jorginho to start. Both of those experienced midfielders may not be at the club for the 2025/26 season and thus losing the chance to sign Guimaraes as a replacement would be a major blow.

"City would also have immediately strengthened and could become a serious contender in the title race towards the latter stages of the campaign."

Arteta on January transfer window

Arsenal look set for another quiet January transfer window, judging by comments from Arteta.

"I never expect January to be super busy, but we have to wait & see where we are," he recently admitted in a press conference. "Some surprises can come, we are prepared for that, some opportunities as well and we have to see. Hopefully the squad availability is going to be better in a few weeks so we will have to wait and see."

Numerous injury issues in one particular area or the threat of relegation often dictate a club's transfer activity in the middle of a season and with the Gunners facing neither of those, no signings being made is a serious possibility.

"While Arteta likely wants to strengthen his squad and also move on a few players, doing either of those in January is far from straightforward.

"In all honesty, Arsenal are better off biding their time, staying patient and making a few marquee moves in the summer especially as Pep Guardiola's dominance with Manchester City appears to be wavering. With that being said, it could be seen as the perfect time to make a huge signing as this season's title is firmly up for grabs."
