Cambridge boss Monk's verdict on Wanderers draw and red card
Garry Monk was proud of his Cambridge side for battling through “adversity” to claim a point against Wanderers.
The U’s had to play most of the second half with 10 men after Jubril Okedina’s red card but found a late equaliser through Sullay Kaikai’s header.
The result keeps Cambridge in the relegation zone, although they are now unbeaten in three league matches.
“I am delighted with the players,” Monk told the club channels. “I was really proud of them, a lot of adversity.
“First half, we started the game really well and created some god opportunities, but it wouldn’t quite go in for us.
“The sending off changed the game for us, I thought we were in a good spot before it. We had to re-adjust and I guess the disappointing thing is, as much as they had territory, we kept them at bay really well for a real high quality team.
“We weren’t really suffering too many dangerous situations on our goal and their goal comes from where we should clear the ball earlier and moved it up the pitch.
“We didn’t and got punished for it, but I have said all along that these boys have spirit and fight. We got our rewards, we deserved what we got out of the game.
“Towards the end it looked like if anyone was going to score, it would be us. I was really proud of that performance to face that adversity and not be deterred by it.
“If anything, it just galvanised us and the crowd. We got some just rewards tonight with the result.”
Okedina was given his marching orders by referee Paul Howard following an incident with George Johnston off the ball.
“I have been there on the pitch in those situations," Monk added. "It is very difficult, emotionally.
“You feel like everything is going against you and when you need a little bit of help, that is going against you as well.
“Quite often your emotions can get the better of you but I thought, as much as that was happening, we were focused on what we still wanted to do.
“We make it difficult for them. With all the territory they had and then numerical advantage, we didn’t suffer too much in terms of shots on our goal.”
