Jamie Carragher has hit back at Pep Guardiola’s jibe about winning the Premier League, insisting he would have a title “if Liverpool were owned by a nation state”.

Guardiola took aim at Sky Sports’ pundits over suggestions his Manchester City team were complacent, pointing out that none have won four league titles in a row and Carragher did not win one during his playing career.

Gary Neville spoke of complacency, while Micah Richards suggested something “isn’t right” at the Etihad and Carragher discussed the title race being open this season, while also praising City. But it prompted a response from Guardiola where he insisted his team were on course for an unprecedented fourth successive title.

In his response, Carragher also made reference to City being charged by the Premier League with more than 100 breaches of financial rules.

Carragher said on X, formerly Twitter:

City have lodged legal challenges against the charges over alleged breaches of financial regulations, which they have denied, with legal experts estimating the case could take between two and four years to resolve.

Guardiola’s comments came during an astonishing six-minute breakdown of his team’s coverage on television. City have dropped six points out of nine, including the draw against Tottenham at the weekend when complacency was mentioned on air.

Sky Sports have paid for most of the live packages in the next £6.7 billion TV deal but they are not immune to criticism from a manager who has won five titles since he arrived in England.

“He knows how difficult it is. Otherwise, Gary Neville would’ve won four [consecutive] Premier Leagues in the best period of Manchester United. But he didn’t do it, you know?” said Guardiola.

“Jamie Carragher didn’t win one once. Micah Richards didn’t win four Premier Leagues in a row. Never, ever. It’s never happened. There is more chance of if not happening than happening. Just one Treble before us. It’s so difficult to do it again and again. We don’t have what others have, who haven’t done it for many, many years.”
