Carsley good, Moyes bad as Leicester City told to learn lesson after Steve Cooper sacking

A 2-1 home defeat by Chelsea, led by the man he had replaced at the King Power Stadium, was the final straw for Steve Cooper.

With just two wins in his opening 12 games, the pressure was clearly building on Cooper, who always faced a tricky task at Leicester City as a former Nottingham Forest manager.

Indeed, arriving at Leicester at a time when it seemed the club would also be hit with a points penalty for breaching spending rules, Cooper could hardly have picked a more difficult return to top-flight management.

Some defiant displays - at home against Spurs, a near-miss at Arsenal, victories over Bournemouth and Southampton, plus fighting draws against Crystal Palace, Everton and Ipswich - suggested Cooper might just do it.

But in recent weeks, gravity seems to have been pulling at the Foxes, dragging them further down the table, and criticism of tactics and player selection also hounded Cooper.

In the end, it all became too much. Enzo Maresca's Chelsea were easy 2-1 winners on Saturday, and the Foxes board have now decided to act in time for the new man to use the January transfer window to aid his recovery plan. Of course, whether it will be enough, remains to be seen.

City fans have been having their say on the manager’s dismissal on social media. Here are a few of their responses…

Adachris: Any coach that is hired has one, and only one, mission: save us from relegation. We have to collect anywhere between 24 and 30 points from the games left to play. It is a very tall order already because we are way way behind.

Southern Fox: I just hope we have thought this out and got a replacement lined up. Don’t know if Ruud VN is any good but at least he looks the part

Arthur2sheds: Not sure if the current crop of players are good enough, maybe the new manager can fix things, and hopefully have some cash in the January transfer window.

Fox in the box: Does anyone think Lee Carsley is being considered!!?

Jimmyklcfc: If we go for Moyes be a bad idea

Mojo2173: The football gods have finally smiled upon LCFC and got the owners to do the right thing before it's too late.

FoxFanNY: It's unfortunately a good move, assuming they hire a decent manager. Cooper was never taking us back to Europe, but I thought he could keep us up. It's clear he can't. Strange player personnel decisions, poor game planning. Credit to the board for taking this action now and not after Christmas when it might be too late.

Paddyedr: The right decision. We have been showing less cohesion and sense of purpose than all our relegation rivals this season. He's not the manager to secure our PL survival. We need a stronger and more accomplished manager at this level.

Foxesgalactico: Players are not good enough and manager certainty wasn't.

Valefox: Common sense has prevailed, but the big problem now is who’s next? Lots of names are being banded around but are there any proven Premier League managers available?

Lynflick: Shouldn't have been appointed.

Citybear: It's a bit simplistic to blame Cooper for all the team’s troubles. There just isn't enough quality in the squad and whoever comes in is going to struggle. I would agree that Cooper’s tactics haven't helped, but I wouldn't be surprised if he quit.
