What Celtic duo have added to their game that was on show in 'massive' moment against Hearts

Matt O'Riley and Reo Hatate have both dramatically improved the defensive side of the game for Celtic, according to Peter Grant.

Prior to this season, it wasn't a big part of either player's game but as a former Hoops midfielder himself who knows all about the importance of defensive nous, Grant has witnessed them both add it to their armoury. He says O'Riley displayed it in the first Old Firm derby of the season at Ibrox, which could be important again on Saturday.

The Denmark midfielder was at it again during the win over Hearts last weekend with a huge block to deny the Jambos a goal from their biggest chance of the game. And Grant insists it has got to the point where it is a "massive" part of both he and Hatate's play.

He told the Go Radio Football Show: “As midfielders, a big part of your job is defending as well. I think O’Riley and Hatate have got much better at that, and I think it happened even in the first game at Ibrox. Matt O’Riley was outstanding defensively.

“I think that’s a big part they’ve added to their game, I really do because last week, the big chance Hearts had, who blocked it? It wasn’t a centre half, it was Matt O’Riley.

“It’s eight yards out, and it’s 40 seconds gone (in the game), so that’s a massive part of the game because you’ve got to fill those areas as a midfielder.”
