Celtic fans 'embarrassed' club during minute's silence as Brendan Rodgers put in awkward Remembrance position
Tam McManus has branded Celtic fans disrupting the minute's silence before the clash with Kilmarnock as "embarrassing."
It was a positive result on the pitch at Rugby Park for Celtic thanks to goals from Callum McGregor and Nicolas Kuhn, but the post-match fallout has centred around the antics of the away end before a ball was even kicked. Killie and the Hoops joined clubs across the country in holding a minute of contemplation ahead of kick-off for Remembrance Day but the tribute was disrupted by signing and booing from sections of the Hoops' support.
Killie boss Derek McInnes branded the disruption "awful" as he took aim at the Celtic fans post-match after referee Nick Walsh was forced to end the moment of silence after just nine seconds. Brendan Rodgers also fielded questions on the incident conceding it was a "difficult one" for the Premiership leaders every year.
The discussion has rumbled on despite league action being put on hold for the international break, with former Celtic goalkeeper Alan Rough admitting PLZ he had sympathy for the boss who had observed the silence and wore a poppy in tribute. He said: "The basis of it for me is it's about respect for people who died in the first and second World War.
"I know there are other wars but I personally have relatives who died in these wars so I want to respect what they did for the future of the people in our family. There are people out there who have other issues with it, I don't have a problem with that - but do it the right way.
"It just looked bad on the club as whole. The manager is wearing a poppy. For a small number of fans they just seem to want to ruin it for the club for half a minute."
Record Sport columnist and former Hibs man McManus added: “I think it’s embarrassing for Celtic. I’m not sure what the club can do. If you don’t agree with it and don’t respect it just stand in silence for a minute, or turn your back or don’t go into the game until later.
"You shouldn’t be shouting and screaming during any minute’s silence. Be a decent person. Stand in silence - it’s one minute.
"Have a bit of decency for one minute, if you don’t agree with it then it’s fine. For me, singing songs and booing and all that is out of order. I get why people do it, there is both sides of the story, but for me just be a decent person - stand for a minute and don’t say anything.”
