The Celtic and Rangers double Hibs star will be cursing as Kuharevich could pay the ultimate price - Tam McManus

Not many strikers can boast to have scored against both sides of the Old Firm at Celtic Park and Ibrox in the same season.

It’s a small badge of honour I’ve got from over two decades ago after beating Stefan Klos in Govan and Javier Sanchez Broto twice at Parkhead. We’ll gloss over the fact I still ended up on the losing Hibs side both times… But I tell you what, Mykola Kuharevich should have joined me in that club already this season. Having missed a penalty in the 1-0 defeat at Ibrox back in September the big man, I’m afraid, was again the fall guy with two bad misses when through one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Celtic.

He’ll know it. Everyone who was there knows it. The first one he hits straight at Schmeichel and the second one he takes a bad touch and lets the keeper come out and save. Joe Newell missed a really good chance too. Hibs could have been 2-0 ahead before Celtic got their act together and had that been the case then who knows how the game would have ended.

Listen, it’s not as easy as some people seem to think when you are through on the keeper. Especially one who fills the goals as well as Schmeichel. But this is what strikers are paid to do.

The best piece of advice I ever got actually came from a goalkeeper, Ian Westwater, who was our goalie coach at Hibs. He always said in a one-on-one situation to aim low at the side of the keeper’s legs because when he’s set in his position it’s the hardest place for him to get to.

You have to have a clear picture in your mind of what you are going to do when you square up to the keeper. Kuharevich had several options, he could go round Schmeichel, he could slot it to the near side, go across him, try and nutmeg him.. there’s so many things running through your head when you run through and you have to choose the right one and be decisive.

But Kuharevich looked like he didn’t really know what he was going to do until it was too late. Some strikers are really composed in that situation. Henrik Larsson was the best example. Nine times out of 10 he would bulge the net. It’s an art and, to be honest, I wasn’t great at it either.

But at Parkhead you simply can’t afford to miss these chances and Kuharevich will be gutted. To be honest I’ve been a bit disappointed in the Swansea hitman since he came back to Easter Road on loan. His conversion rate was better in his first spell and, while he’s still getting into good positions, he’s just not producing the goods enough.

He might pay the price for his misses this Saturday because I reckon if Dwight Gayle had been presented those two chances at Celtic Park then he’d have buried one of them at least.

Hopefully Kieron Bowie will be back in action soon too after he was cruelly stopped in his tracks by a hamstring injury not long after his big move north from Fulham. The Scotland U21 striker was looking the business and having him back available in the new year would really give David Gray a boost.

Honestly, I’ve never seen a Hibs team create so many chances at Parkhead. Nine shots on target is incredible. On the back of scoring three against Motherwell and three against Aberdeen then it looks like something has clicked in the final third.

If they can reproduce the chance creation against Ross County this weekend then they will win the game. I’m certain of it. And they need to. A victory will lift them above County and with the way the other games are would also clear Hibs of the relegation zone. Then it would be a case of making sure they don’t go back there.

County haven’t won a Premiership game on the road for 15 months which is dreadful. They’ve only scored one goal away from home in the league this season.

It’s a totally different game to last Saturday. Celtic played such a high line that Hibs had lots of joy with their pace in behind. But County, I’d expect, will come and sit and frustrate then try to hit on the counter.

It’s a dangerous game. The pressure is ramping up and these Hibs players have to show they can handle it. Celtic park is a big occasion. But this is a massive game. And three points is the minimum requirement.
