Central's Johnson commits to LaGrange for golf

Apr. 1—THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central golf star Harrison Johnson has committed to LaGrange College to play golf for the Panthers

"They're going to get a kid who is a tireless worker, a good competitor. He's a good leader," said Thomas County Central head golf coach Kevin Esch.

"Outside the game of golf he's a good kid. I know he's an Eagle Scout, a very high GPA, smart kid. His parents did a great job raising him. On the golf course, they're getting a kid who's got a bunch of experience. He's been playing in tournaments ever since his freshman year and he's really been a leader for us ever since his sophomore and junior year."

Johnson has continued to show excellence on the golf course in his senior year. Most recently, he led the Yellow Jackets as the low scorer during a tournament in Tifton with a 77, securing him fourth place and a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Esch believes that Johnson will have a good chance to play right away with LaGrange as the Panthers are currently retooling their roster. The golf roster is currently filled with freshmen and sophomores with only a single upperclassman listed.

"I think Harrison's got a chance to play right away as he goes in and works hard over the summer and does what he's supposed to do during the fall semester," said Esch.

For Esch, he hopes that Johnson's success will inspire the young Yellow Jacket golfers of the future and show them where the game of golf can take them.

"It shows that if they put in the work they can reach their goals and what they want to do with the game of golf and it's good for the younger guys to see because Harrison's done nothing but work hard since he got to Thomas County. He did it all through middle school and all through high school. So, it's good for the young guys to see that as long as they keep working hard they can reach their goals in this game."
