Champions League draw LIVE! Chelsea to face Real Madrid in quarter-finals as Man City get Bayern Munich
Champions League draw LIVE!
Chelsea and Manchester City discovered their fate as the draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Champions League took place this morning. They are the only Premier League sides still in the competition after Liverpool and Tottenham fell to Real Madrid and AC Milan respectively at the last-16 stage.
The Blues will face Real Madrid in the last-eight in what will be a huge task against the defending champions. Graham Potter’s job was potentially saved with victory over Borussia Dortmund - knocking Real Madrid out would really kickstart his reign. Manchester City meanwhile are up against Bayern Munich, with the two favourites to win the competition draw against each other.
Napoli will face AC Milan in an all-Serie A encounter, with Benfica up against Inter Milan. The semi-final draw also took place, with Chelsea and Manchester City facing off should they both get through their tough quarter-finals. An Italian or Portuguese side will be in this season’s final.

Chelsea will face holders Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals once again.
The two European giants were paired together for the third successive season during Friday’s draw, having also met in an explosive last-eight tie last term that saw Chelsea come agonisingly close to pulling off an epic comeback at the Bernabeu.
Karim Benzema’s first-leg hat-trick at Stamford Bridge looked to have Madrid sailing through, but that advantage was sensationally wiped out by three Chelsea goals in Spain before Rodrygo’s effort and then a 96th-minute Benzema header sealed a pulsating 5-4 aggregate victory for eventual winners Real.
Chelsea overcame Los Blancos in the semi-finals in 2020/21, winning 2-0 at home and drawing 1-1 away before going on to lift the trophy for the second time with victory over Manchester City in Porto.

Well then!

1 - Chelsea have only lost one of their seven games against Real Madrid in European competition - indeed, they have the lowest percentage of losses against Real Madrid (14%) of any side to have played them 5+ times in Europe. Thorn. pic.twitter.com/IxBYBm0jGe

Familiar foes...

It's a pretty tough draw for Chelsea. They could end the season having faced Man City six times, too.

Draw in full:

Quarter-finals:

Inter Milan vs Benfica
Manchester City vs Bayern Munich
AC Milan vs Napoli
Semi-finals:
AC Milan/Napoli vs Inter Milan/Benfica

So on one side of the draw it’s the Serie A sides battling it out with Benfica, could well get an AC Milan vs Inter Milan semi-final.
On the other, a couple of blockbuster clashes. The two Premier League sides have huge quarter-final tests - get through that and they’ll face each other.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich

HUGE. The Pep Guardiola derby.
Inter Milan vs Benfica
11:15 , Matt Verri
They will both be pretty happy with that draw
Real Madrid vs Chelsea

Not quite what Graham Potter wanted to see, I’d imagine...

One last run through the rules. It’s an open draw, anyone can play anyone.
Inter and Milan can’t both play at home within 24 hours, so if they’re drawn at home in the same leg then Inter’s fixtures will be reversed. Milan get priority as domestic champions.
On we go. Time to begin. At last.

Altintop confirms Istanbul is ready to host the final. Good.
And the fun continues, another special guest brought out. Patrick Kluivert the latest ex-player to stroll out.
11:06 , Matt Verri
Here we go. The main man himself, Giorgio Marchetti is on stage. Pretty sure these draws are the only thing he does, spends months prepping for this.
He too is now giving his own poetic round-up of the season so far. Hamit Altintop is called on to help with the draw, really is the ultimate honour.
Aaaaaand we’re off
11:03 , Matt Verri
Up and running in Nyon. Getting a full run down of the last-16 to kick us off.
The first of what will surely be a few hundred montages is underway, as well as a look at Istanbul, the host of this season’s final.
Hang in there.
Plenty of big-hitters
10:57 , Matt Verri
Benfica are probably, with all due respect, the team that most are looking at and fancying their chances.
Napoli and Manchester City very much teams to avoid, along with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, although it’s not great to go into a draw keen to avoid half the sides in it!
Ten minute warning!

Bayern down PSG
10:46 , Matt Verri
Whoever came through the blockbuster last-16 tie between Bayern Munich and PSG was always likely to be viewed as one of the favourites to go all the way.
That is exactly what Bayern are, after PSG once again fell short in the Champions League. How many more attempts will they get with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi?
Strong montage effort
10:40 , Matt Verri
AC Milan going strong with their preview of the draw, much more effort than the other clubs are putting in.
Think it’s only fair that they start their first leg 1-0 up.

Not long now...
10:35 , Matt Verri
Draw should be getting underway in about 25 minutes’ time.
UEFA not exactly snappy when it comes to these things, but the fact there are Europa League and Europa Conference League draws to come should ensure they hurry things along a bit.
We can hope so, anyway.
A lot has changed!
10:27 , Matt Verri
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid the only sides in this morning’s draw that also featured a decade ago.
Malaga one of those teams in the last-eight back in 2013 - they’re 20th in the Segunda Division now!

Haaland: I’m here to win Champions League
10:17 , Matt Verri
Erling Haaland is fully aware that Manchester City signed him to help them win the Champions League.
The striker now has ten goals in Europe this season after scoring five in the second leg against Leipzig, taking his tally for City to 39 goals.
“Of course the club want to win the Champions League,” Haaland said.
“They’ve won four out of the last five Premier League titles. They didn’t bring me in to win the Premier League because they already know how to win it.
“So, you can read between the lines. I’m here to try to help the club develop even more and to win the Champions League for the first time.”
Chelsea in bullish mood
10:10 , Matt Verri
Speaking at a Chelsea event this week, Graham Potter was pretty upbeat when asked about his side’s current form.
He said: “We will try and beat Everton, take the draw and then we will try and win the f***ing Champions League!”
Cesar Azpilicueta added on the draw: “Whatever we take. I think the other teams should be worried about us, more than us [being worried about them].”
We shall see.
Man City favourites
10:03 , Matt Verri
Can Erling Haaland help Manchester City win the Champions League for the first time? The market certainly thinks so, Pep Guardiola’s side are favourites to go all the way this season.
Bayern Munich also well-fancied after they knocked out PSG, with Napoli alongside European specialists Real Madrid.
Man City 7/4
Bayern Munich 11/4
Napoli 5/1
Real Madrid 5/1
Chelsea 10/1
Inter Milan 20/1
Benfica 25/1
AC Milan 33/1

Napoli flying on two fronts
09:56 , Matt Verri
There are three Serie A sides in the quarter-finals, the first time that has happened since the 2005/06 season.
The Italian charge is led by Napoli, who cruised past Eintracht Frankfurt to reach the last-eight. It’s shaping up to be a very, very special season for Napoli - just the 18 points clear at the top of Serie A.
Haaland marches on!

Bit of Milan housekeeping...
09:42 , Matt Verri
There are no restrictions in place for the quarter-final draw, though a change will need to be made if AC Milan and Inter Milan are both drawn at home in the same leg.
It’s been confirmed by UEFA that Inter’s fixtures will be reversed should that happen, with Milan taking priority as domestic champions.
They really do think of everything.
Chelsea to go deep in Europe?
09:36 , Matt Verri
Chelsea are in the draw this morning, which is just as well for Graham Potter and his job at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues went into their last-16 tie with Borussia Dortmund incredibly low on confidence, but a strong display at home in the secong leg got the job doen to ease the pressure on the Blues boss.
It was a surprise when they went all the way to win the Champions League in 2021, but doing it this time would be something else!
When will the quarter-finals be played?
09:29 , Matt Verri
The first legs of the quarter-finals are scheduled for April 11/12 with the return legs a week later, on April 18/19.
For those full of optimism this morning, the Champions League final is on June 10 in Istanbul. Maybe hold off on booking those flights...

It’s a free-for-all!
No sides will be kept apart in this morning’s draw, so Chelsea could face Manchester City for example and Inter Milan are potential opponents for Napoli.
We’ll also then have the semi-final draw for added fun.
