Oxford United have sacked Des Buckingham as head coach in a bid to stop a drift down the Championship table.

Buckingham , a former Stoke youth coach, took over from Liam Manning in November last year and guided Oxford to promotion from League One via the play-offs. He started this season with three wins in his first five games - but the third, over Stoke, has been followed by a series of one win in the next 15.

A 3-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday yesterday left Oxford in 20th, one point above Portsmouth and Plymouth Argyle in the relegation zone and two ahead of bottom side Hull City.

A statement from the club said: "Des was appointed in November 2023 and led the Club to promotion to the EFL Sky Bet Championship at the end of the 2023/24 season. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Des for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

"The appointment of a new head coach will be confirmed in due course."

Steven Schumacher, whose defeat at Oxford in September spelled the end of his time at Stoke, is sure to be among the favourites for the vacancy.

Millwall are also on the lookout for a new manager after Neil Harris signed off with a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Club legend Harris, who announced last week he was standing down after referring to a section of his own supporters as 'thickos' for not lowering expectations when three key players were injured, was given a standing ovation by Millwall fans.

He said: “It’s not the first tiff I’ve had with Millwall fans over the years! As a player and a coach. People called it a tiff and there was maybe things in the press, but it’s not really. There’s certainly no anger or impact felt longer term on that, for me or the supporters.

“It was a beautiful moment for us, it was a shame it was 300 miles from home and there weren’t a few more here, but I don’t need that. I don’t need that because it’s been a privilege to lead this football club for so long. It’s a brilliant football club, it’s a unique football club and I’ll be back as a supporter in the future seeing everybody.

“It was very emotional in the changing room for me afterwards, and a lot of the players that have been with me for a long time. And my staff as well. All I can do is wish the club well, make sure that the fans who have supported me relentlessly over the years support the new regime that come in.”
