Chelsea are reportedly ready to battle Real Madrid for the signing of one of River Plate's rising stars.

The summer transfer window opens in a few weeks and the Blues are likely to have several targets that will be under consideration. Even before the window opens there have been several rumours linking potential new signings with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino is nearing the end of his first full season as Chelsea manager. The Blues are seventh in the Premier League table and have just three more top-flight fixtures to try and secure European football against rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and Manchester United.

Plans are likely to already be underway for what business Chelsea look to complete in the transfer market. Even before the window opens, reports are claiming that the Blues face competition for the signing of one of Argentina's brightest young prospects.

According to reports from Argentina, cited by Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea are interested in signing River Plate star Franco Mastantuono. It has been claimed that Real Madrid also have an interest in the midfielder, and will now have to compete with the Blues for the player's signature.

Mastantuono, 16, is thought to have a release clause in his contract with River Plate worth €45 million (£38.6 million). However, that clause is reported to increase to €50 million (£43 million) in the final 10 days of the transfer window this summer.

It has not been stated if Chelsea would be willing to pay the release clause in Mastantuono's contract to bring the player to Stamford Bridge. The teenager has already made 11 senior appearances for River Plate in his career, scoring two goals including one in the Copa Libertadores group stage win over Libertad last month.
