Carabao Cup draw LIVE! Arsenal, Manchester United join Chelsea to learn third-round fate

Carabao Cup draw LIVE!

The League Cup kicks up a gear tonight as the remaining Premier League teams enter the fray. Tottenham have already been knocked out, so will not be involved, as the biggest scalp of the competition so far. Chelsea almost joined them tonight, but came from behind to beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1.

The Blues feared the worst when The League Two visitors took a shock lead from the penalty spot in the 19th minute through James Tilley, but Noni Madueke - with a penalty of his won - and Enzo Fernandez eventually secured a narrow win.

Holders Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle, West Ham, Brighton and Aston Villa are all in the hat, with all fixtures possible from this stage onwards with the regionalised portion of the cup finishing in round two. What will the Carabao Cup have in store for us in the third round? Follow the draw LIVE below with our dedicated blog.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 22:04 , Alex Young

The Carabao Cup third round draw is coming up soon, expected in about 10 minutes or so.

Full-time!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:44 , Alex Young

99min: And that’s your lot! Chelsea are into the third round... just!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:44 , Alex Young

98min: The corner comes in, the Wimbledon keeper is up and Chelsea clear... Maatsen takes the ball over the halfway line with the goal gaping, he generously passes to Fernandez... so misses an open goal!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:43 , Alex Young

97min: Oh my, so close from Wimbledon in the final minute! Diasi concedes a corner...

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:40 , Alex Young

94min: Gallagher almost rounds off a superb Chelsea move but his shot is over the bar from inside the area.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:37 , Alex Young

“Robert Sanchez gave away a penalty but hasn't let it impact his performance. Probably been Chelsea's best player here aside from Enzo.”

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:36 , Alex Young

91min: Seven minutes added on.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:33 , Alex Young

87min: Maatsen is booked.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:31 , Alex Young

82min: Madueke is replaced by Caicedo. The forward gets a very good reception.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:24 , Alex Young

79min: More changes for Wimbledon. Sasu and Bugiel on for Neufville and Pell.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:24 , Alex Young

75min: Almost a third from Chelsea! It’s four on two as Jackson takes it wide and spots Madueke free inside the area, but his shot is straight at Bass!

He had to score.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:20 , Alex Young

74min: That’s Fernandez’s first goal for Chelsea, but probably not against the opponents he expected. Bass is just standing outside his goal with his hand on his hips.

GOAL!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:18 , Alex Young

73min: Fernandez strokes home into an empty net after a huge mistake from Wimbledon keeper Bass!

He sent his clearance straight at Gusto. The two subs capitalise.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:17 , Alex Young

72min: Jackson is down briefly after what looked like a clash of heads, but he’ll be fine.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:15 , Alex Young

71min: Ooof, what a save! Fernandez tests his luck from fully 30 yards and it’s flying top corner which Bass does superbly to tip over.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:14 , Alex Young

70min: Tilley fires a shot from distance which fizzes wide.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:12 , Alex Young

“A worry as Levi Colwill goes down the tunnel for treatment after picking up an injury. He is well-placed to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad.”

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:11 , Alex Young

67min: Burstow and Colwill off for Fernandez and Gusto.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:10 , Alex Young

65min: Looks like Fernandez and Gusto are coming on.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:08 , Alex Young

63min: Wimbledon win a corner but it’s sent straight into Sanchez’s arms. He looks up at Jackson’s run but ignores him, much to the striker’s chagrin.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:07 , Alex Young

62min: Oh, hold on, Wimbledon almost score a second as Al-Hamadi’s shot is blocked by Disasi, who celebrates like he has denied a certain goal. And he may well have done.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:06 , Alex Young

61min: An hour gone and Chelsea have certainly improved since half-time, with Jackson very lively, but still a bit disjointed. Burstow yet to find a rhythm.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:02 , Alex Young

58min: Double change for Wimbledon as Al-Hamadi and Brown come on for Pearce and Davison.

Al-Hamadi has enough about him to be a danger to Chelsea.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:02 , Alex Young

56min: Gallagher earns Chelsea’s second shot on target but wriggling past two tackles, but it’s straight down Bass’ throat.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 21:00 , Alex Young

54min: Great tackle by Ugochukwu on Tilley earns a round of applause from the Chelsea fans as he stops a counter.

He’s done well tonight.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:57 , Alex Young

51min: Wimbledon are screaming for a corner after Pell’s shot is sent wide. It looks like he may have a point, but gets booked for his complaints as a goal kick is given.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:55 , Alex Young

49min: Pearce gets booked for a tough tackle on Jackson.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:54 , Alex Young

48min: Already better from Chelsea as Jackson turns on a sixpence and fires a shot on target. That’s Chelsea’s first from open play of the game.

Second half!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:51 , Alex Young

46min: Jackson replaces Moriera, then. The teenager really struggled in the first half...

...and we are back under way.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:49 , Alex Young

It looks like Nicolas Jackson is coming on a half-time.

HT thoughts

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:40 , Alex Young

Two penalties have us level at the break, but Pochettino will know his players do not deserve to be.

Changes at the break?

Half-time!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:36 , Alex Young

50min: That’s it for an interesting first half.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:34 , Alex Young

48min: Some Chelsea fans respond to being gifted an equaliser at home to a fourth-tier club by chanting “you’re not singing anymore” to the away fans. I’m sure we can all agree that is incredibly small time.

GOAL!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:32 , Alex Young

47min: Madueke wins the spot kick and converts the spot kick. A sickener for the visitors.

PENALTY TO CHELSEA!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:30 , Alex Young

46min: A gift as Madueke is fouled.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:29 , Alex Young

“Diego Moriera is having a difficult night. He doesn’t quite look ready. Not a surprise given he is Chelsea’s least experienced player.”

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:28 , Alex Young

42min: Maatsen fires in a fine tackle near the halfway line to start an attack, finds Ugochukwu who looks to Cucurella but Wimbledon overturn it and counter through Ball - who wins a corner!

Chelsea all at sea.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:26 , Alex Young

40min: Chelsea need a spark from somewhere. Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson among the subs warming up.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:22 , Alex Young

37min: Right on cue, Madueke wins a free kick in a dangerous area and he fancies a go here if he can get it up and over the wall... but he can’t.

It’s up, and then keeps going up and well over the bar.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:20 , Alex Young

35min: Chelsea are just not pushing Wimbledon at all. It’s all too easy for the defence.

Madueke is probably Chelsea’s best player of the half, but there are hardly many candidates.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:18 , Alex Young

33min: The last time Chelsea were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the second round was back way in the 1995-96 season.

They lost 1-0 to Stoke over two legs. I know it’s not the point, but imagine a two-legged second-round League Cup tie, why?

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:15 , Alex Young

31min: Half an hour gone and Chelsea are yet to test Wimbledon with a shot on target.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:14 , Alex Young

28min: Pochettino sends Chilwell to warm up after Cucurella gives away possession with a sloppy pass.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:13 , Alex Young

27min: Corner comes to nothing.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:12 , Alex Young

26min: Chelsea pushing now and Gallagher is lively after a rather flat start from all involved. The captain tries his luck and wins a corner.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:10 , Alex Young

23min: Almost an instant reply from Chelsea as Maatsen carves open some space, has a pop at goal but hits the side netting.

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:06 , Alex Young

“That was a soft penalty given by referee Tony Harrington but there is no VAR tonight. Mauricio Pochettino was furious. Anyway, I guess we have a match.”

GOAL!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:04 , Alex Young

19min: Tilley steps up... and scores!

The Dons head at Stamford Bridge!

PENALTY TO WIMBLEDON!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:03 , Alex Young

18min: Sanchez has just wiped out Davidson!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:01 , Alex Young

16min: Moreira takes the corner but it is headed away.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 20:00 , Alex Young

15min: Ugochukwu has been busy in the early stages, first launching the Mount chance and now sends Madueke running down the flank, and the winger wins a corner.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:58 , Alex Young

13min: Gallagher does well to dart into the area, looks up and tries to spot Burstow into the area but his cut back was wayward.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:57 , Alex Young

10min: Jackson will be happy with how his team have started tonight so far. Composed and calm.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:54 , Alex Young

6min: A slow start to the game but Ugochukwu is showing off great passing range.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:50 , Alex Young

3min: An early sighter for Chelsea as Moreira is sent scampering into the area but Colwill, but can’t quite get the ball under control.

Kick-off!

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:48 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:43 , Alex Young

It's a bit of a surprise there is not more youth on the bench for Chelsea today. Mauricio Pochettino has the likes of Michael Golding with his squad but has just Ishe Samuels-Smith on the bench.

Expect Ian Maatsen will be the no10 today. He makes his first start. Lesley Ugochukwu also makes his first start. Diego Moreira makes his full debut for Chelsea. Conor Gallagher captains the team for the first time.

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:41 , Alex Young

Right, almost time. Here come the teams.

Cucurella’s swan song?

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:34 , Alex Young

It’s also interesting that Marc Cucurella starts tonight, even though it was expected.

Chelsea have accepted a loan bid from Manchester United for him, so to risk him in a game which the Blues should have no problem winning without him appears an unnecessary risk.

A penny for Erik ten Hag’s thoughts.

Poch programme notes

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:28 , Alex Young

Mauricio Pochettino has outlined his thoughts on tonight, his team selection and the Carabao Cup in his programme notes.

He wrote: “With three home games in eight days, this period is a chance for us to build some momentum and to keep developing the connection we have with all of you in the stands at Stamford Bridge.

“It's also the beginning of another competition, a cup that we go into wanting to win, like all the others, but with the understanding that we must take it one game at a time.

“With so many fixtures in quick succession, we have to use the squad carefully and it is an opportunity for us to make the most of the strength in depth that we have here.”

Nizaar on the squad

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:23 , Alex Young

Nizaar Kinsella has plenty of thoughts on the Chelsea XI and subs bench.

Talking of Johnnie Jackson, he has made a big call in his team news.

Eighteen-year-old Morgan Williams makes his first start for the club. Some place for your full debut!

Exclusive Jackson interview

Wednesday 30 August 2023 19:04 , Alex Young

Johnnie Jackson’s verdict on AFC Wimbledon’s clash with Chelsea tonight is unlikely to be one he repeats in the dressing room ahead of kick-off.

“The most expensively assembled team in history playing against a League Two side that relies on free transfers and loans,” the Wimbledon boss tells Standard Sport.

That assessment does not particularly inspire confidence that a Carabao Cup upset is on the cards at Stamford Bridge, but it is hard to escape the gulf in financial might between the clubs.

This second-round clash comes two days before transfer deadline day, by which point Chelsea might have crossed the £1billion mark in signings since the club’s takeover a year ago. Wimbledon have brought in 10 new faces this summer without spending a penny on transfer fees.

“It’s crazy when you look at the numbers and Chelsea’s spending in the last few windows,” Jackson says. “It’s a world away, like two different sports, but that’s the beauty of cup competitions.”

Youngsters get chances

Wednesday 30 August 2023 18:59 , Alex Young

It’s a very intriguing Chelsea side, then. Lesley Ugochukwu making his first start since his £23million move from Rennes this summer, and pairs captain Conor Gallagher in midfield

Noni Madueke and Ian Maatsen also start under Pochettino for the first time.

Pochettino confirmed at his pre-match press conference that “four or five” players aged between “16 and 17” could be involved, and striker Mason Burstow and defender Bashir Humphreys in from the off.

Marc Cucurella - a target for Manchester United before Friday’s transfer deadline - comes in for 38-year-old Thiago Silva.

Pochettino: I want to win it all

Wednesday 30 August 2023 18:23 , Alex Young

Mauricio Pochettino drew criticism during his time with Tottenham by dismissing the importance of the Carabao Cup.

In his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, he looked to reverse that view and claimed he was misunderstood at the time.

"I want to win the Carabao Cup, I want to win the FA Cup and I want to win the Premier League then see what happens," Pochettino told reporters on Tuesday.

"I want to win [on Wednesday] and I want to win the cups and the Premier League. Every single competition is going to be a challenge for us and opportunity to win."

Score prediction

Wednesday 30 August 2023 18:09 , Alex Young

Wimbledon have been impressive so far this season in League Two but this is an obvious step up in quality, regardless of the lineup Pochettino names.

With no European football this season, the Chelsea boss can be expected to target the domestic cups and the Blues should have no issues in easing to a comfortable win here.

Chelsea to win 3-1.

Wimbledon team news

Wednesday 30 August 2023 17:56 , Alex Young

Wimbledon will be without captain Jake Reeves after the midfielder was forced off against Forest Green. Armani Little, who also likely would have played tonight, suffered the same fate.

Little could be passed fit and is expected to be joined by James Ball in midfield. Harry Pell will deputise if the former is ruled out.

Predicted XI

Wednesday 30 August 2023 17:46 , Alex Young

As usual, we asked Nizaar Kinsella to provide a predicted line-up for tonight after Mauricio Pochettino’s press conference.

Marc Cucurella has been included but a possible loan move to Manchester United is gathering steam, so one to keep an eye on.

Here’s what he plumped for.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Disasi, Colwill, Cucurella; Ugochukwu, Gallagher; Madueke, Maatsen, Sterling; Jackson

Chelsea team news

Wednesday 30 August 2023 17:38 , Alex Young

Mauricio Pochettino has promised to hand minutes to a number of youngsters tonight - but among them won’t be new signing Djordje Petrovic.

Petrovic joined Chelsea in a £14million deal from New England Revolution on Sunday but did not receive Football Association clearance to play in time. Robert Sanchez will continue in goal as a result.

Pochettino therefore has 11 players unavailable to face the League Two minnows, including fellow summer signing Romeo Lavia who still lacks match fitness.

The problems offer a chance for Chelsea’s younger players to impress, with Lesley Ugochukwu in line to make his first start since his £23million move from Rennes this summer. Noni Madueke and Ian Maatsen could also start under Pochettino for the first time as he plans to rest some players.

Pochettino confirmed at his pre-match press conference that “four or five” players aged between “16 and 17” could be involved with Mason Burstow, Diego Moreira, Eddie Beach and Bashir Humphreys on the bench for Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Luton on Friday night.

How to watch in UK?

Wednesday 30 August 2023 17:23 , Alex Young

Well, you can’t. Only those at Stamford Bridge will be able to see the game unfold live.

It will not be shown live on TV as Sky Sports have not picked it for broadcast. Instead, Doncaster Rovers vs Everton has got the nod with a cupset in mind given the Toffees' woeful start to their own campaign.

No other UK broadcaster has League Cup rights for live action. Highlights will be shown at 12.15am on Wednesday night, into Thursday morning, on ITV4.

Welcome

Wednesday 30 August 2023 17:15 , Alex Young

Chelsea tonight enter the Carabao Cup in the second round, the earliest stage since 2016, due to their struggles last season.

It is no real reason to be down on tonight, though, as AFC Wimbledon are the opponents. It is the first time the Dons will face their London rivals since being founded in 2002, though both teams have a long, storied history in Wimbledon’s former guise.

Kick-off is at 7.45pm. Stick with us.
