Chris Davies says Birmingham City’s draw with Northampton ‘feels like a loss’ after the Cobblers snatched a point in stoppage time.

Mitch Pinnock capitalised on a defensive lapse in the 97th minute to cancel out Jay Stansfield’s opener. Blues’ run of home victories ended and they lost ground on League One leaders Wycombe who won 1-0 at Wigan Athletic.

“It feels like a loss,” Davies reflected. “I thought we played a good game in general, we had everything that I wanted to see. We couldn’t get the second goal. We hit the post, balls were flashing across the box and the keeper’s making saves. If you don’t get the second goal then, in a game like that, it’s 1-0 and you move on.

“To concede the goal that we did in the last seconds of the game when you have no time to respond is difficult to take.”

Late substitute Dion Sanderson didn’t cover himself in glory challenging for the long ball that led to Pinnock’s equaliser and Tomoki Iwata inadvertently gave the ball away inside his own box.

Davies said: “The goal was just a long ball and the centre-backs are there to deal with those balls. It’s just bounced down, one pass and one shot. It’s the poorest goal we’ve conceded this season and it’s really difficult to take.”

Blues now have two weeks to stew on their draw with Northampton after next weekend’s game against Stevenage was postponed due to international call-ups. Davies is expected to give his charges some time off to refresh before Blues’ next League One match at Shrewsbury.
