Summer signing Ben Davies has emerged as ‘a real leader’ for Birmingham City according to manager Chris Davies.

The on-loan Rangers defender has forced his way into Blues’ starting XI after starting the season playing second fiddle to Christoph Klarer and Krystian Bielik. Chris Davies has been so keen to shoehorn his namesake into his line-up that Blues captain Bielik has been shifted to right-back in recent weeks.

Blues have generally defended more solidly with Davies at the heart of their defence. The team has only conceded six goals with Davies on the field and they haven’t lost any of the 11 games he has started.

Davies has gone about his business in a quiet, unassuming manner and, according to his manager, that is exactly how he behaves away from the pitch.

“He’s not the loudest guy in the room but he’s one of those who, when he speaks, people listen,” Chris Davies told BirminghamLive. “There’s a good team spirit and Ben’s a big part of that. He goes about his business quietly, professionally, but with an air of leadership about him.

“I spoke to Ben the other day and had a good catch up with him. He’s settled in really well. He came down from Rangers and Rangers and Celtic are big clubs but Glasgow is an intense place to be. He came down and it took him a few weeks to get used to and acclimatise to how we work and play.

“He’s a real leader. He’s a player that when he speaks, the others listen, they respect him. He reads the game so well, can pass the ball, defends well, competes well.

“I’ve been really impressed with him. I think he’s got through the games well because sometimes in his career he hasn’t quite had the rhythm physically, going through games, but he’s done that well and looks strong.”

Davies is one of four loan players in Blues’ squad but the deal which brought him to St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park from Rangers isn’t believed to include an option-to-buy. Signing Davies to a permanent contract isn’t top of Blues’ agenda right now, but Chris Davies at least seems open to the idea.

“I haven’t looked that far yet,” admitted the Blues boss. “It’s about getting through this period and seeing where we go with it. The contribution he has made has been excellent. It’s a case of all parties looking at that when the time is right and seeing what is best. All I can say from my point of view as the manager is I’ve been really pleased with what he’s brought to the club.”
