Former Aston Villa striker and pundit Chris Sutton considers Wednesday night's defeat in Brugge to have been an opportunity missed in their Champions League adventure - because the games aren't going to get any easier from hereon out.

Villa were beaten 1-0 by Club Brugge after Tyrone Mings was penalised for a bizarre handball in which he picked up the ball after being passed to by Emi Martinez. Hans Vanaken duly converted the penalty.

Sutton, who spent the final months of his career at Villa before retiring in 2007, expressed concerns over the level of performance and energy Villa have displayed recently, having lost three games on the spin in three separate competitions. There remains work to do in Europe, too, having started so well but with a tough set of fixtures still lying before them.

"Aston Villa got what they deserved," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The performance level wasn't there. They looked a tired team, a jaded team, it didn't click in the final third and Club Brugge had the better chances. Had it not been for Martinez, the scoreline could've been greater.

"The start to the Champions League campaign overall has been excellent, but Wednesday night was an opportunity for Aston Villa to make their life easy, in terms of qualification. They didn't do that. They have put themselves under a bit of pressure, the games aren't going to get any easier - they Juventus, Leipzig, Monaco and Celtic to come, so work to do.

"The start to the season has been good but this worrying little patch...it's more to do with the levels of performance not being there, which is the worry for Unai Emery and Aston Villa."
