Tyrese Campbell was 'miles off it' in terms of his physical condition when he arrived at Sheffield United as a free agent in the summer, admits Chris Wilder.

The 24-year-old striker, who had been released by Stoke City at the end of last season, had to be patient for his first team chance and focus on his work with the fitness staff until he made his first start in October. He's now started three of the last four, all wins, and scored three times as his new side have climbed to second in the Championship.

His latest was the winner in a Sheffield derby against Wednesday on Saturday and boss Wilder said: "He's getting rewards for hard work and we've got a really talented footballer.

"Hopefully this is the start for him and he can achieve the things many people said of him at the start of his career. "He's another free transfer but physically he was miles off it when he came in and he's had to work, the conditioning coaches have worked with him.

"I thought today, especially after he scored, for ten or 15 minutes he was a real handful.

"There's a player in there and the best thing about it is he wants to be that player. He was talked about a lot and I think off the pitch it's been difficult. But we like his personality, attitude and his ability in terms of his finishing is there for everyone to see."

Campbell only scored three league goals in the whole of last term for Stoke but he has been winning over Sheffield United fans and pundits.

The Sheffield Star wrote: "He has been a popular arrival at Bramall Lane and on the face of the evidence so far, another genius Wilder signing on a free after the recent successes of the likes of David McGoldrick."

The striker himself, who scored against Stoke last month, recognised the significance of a big goal in a derby.

He said: “It was surreal for me. To do something like that so early in my Sheffield United career, to score the winner in such a big game, I'm just so happy. I can't thank the club, the fans, the manager, the staff, my teammates enough for everything they've done and how they've been with me since I've been here. I came out after half time and looked and I said: 'I like scoring at that side'. I got another at that side [in front of the Kop] and just happy it was the winner."
