Whether it was the long midweek trek to Preston or the short bus ride to Luton, following Watford on the road lately has been a pretty miserable experience.

So those who travelled up to Sheffield Wednesday were able to withdraw some of the debits as the Hornets put on a show, the majority of which was served up right in front of them.

"I was happy that five of the goals went in at their end," said Tom Cleverley.

"They didn't stop singing for the whole game.

"We've got another long trip on Tuesday and we have to back this performance up.

"Tuesday marks the end of four away trips in five games, which was a really difficult period on paper.

"We want to round out that group of away games with another strong performance."

In the first half, the Watford travelling army were sat behind the goal which their side were defending, and it wasn't always easy viewing.

"I didn't think we managed the start of the game as well as we can, and I could easily be sitting here having a more negative interview because the three consecutive corners came from us playing short in the first two minutes," admitted the head coach.

"That's not generally how you approach playing away from home and I was disappointed with how we started.

"Then in the last five minutes of the first half we lost too many duels.

"We can talk abut systems and overloads but sometimes the basics are what let you down."

The two goals the Hornets conceded came from basic crosses into the six-yard box.

"That's something we need to work on if we're going to play four at the back, the way we defend our box," Cleverly stressed.

"The sort of giveaway of playing this system is you lose a centre back in the middle of the box.

"We've conceded from two crosses into our box today so it's something we have to work at.

"I like this system as it gives us a different dimension and an unpredictability, but we have to improve at defending our box."

Even in the first half, Watford showed a steely determination that hadn't been evident in other away games.

"There was a real personality in the first half to compete when the performance was not so good," said Cleverley.

"There has to be a resilience about us because you will go through periods away from home where you suffer from bad decisions, their crowd gets up, you are under pressure.

"You have to be resilient in and through those periods to be hard to beat.

"It's something we've not shown in previous games this season but we showed that today.

"When you do, then you will always have a chance to dominate the ball.

"We had some uncomfortable moments but then in the second half was showed our class to take control of the game with the ball.

"We were nowhere near it at Preston and Luton, we were better at Leeds. The away form isn't perhaps quite as shocking as it looks on paper but we had three really poor performances, which we've given some payback for today.

"In the second half we were organised and we had good structure. In possession were fabulous, and we looked a confident team where everyone wanted the ball with class in the final third."

After a win like that, might the players be treated to fish and chips on the journey home?!

"No, it'll be something on the menu on the bus - but whatever we had before the match we'll be having it again on Tuesday!" Cleverley laughed.
