Club Brugge stunned high-flying Aston Villa to condemn them to their first Champions League defeat.

But defender Brandon Mechele has warned his teammates they'll have to play even BETTER against Celtic to get anything at Parkhead. The Belgians secured a priceless 1-0 home win over Villa earlier in the month to move onto six points, just one behind Celtic, in the new-look league phase. Another victory tonight in Glasgow would put them in pole position to secure a play-off spot.

However, with Celts also just three points away from rubber-stamping their place in the knockouts, Belgium international Mechele believes the Pro League side will have to top their display against Villa to get a result at Celtic Park.

He said: "I think that will be the level at least that we have to bring, maybe even more, we don't know, but we have to give our best, and then we see where we get. It is my job to stop the Celtic attackers, so that's my first concern. And if I do my job good, then we have at least one point I think so that's what we will do.

"As long as we give it our best, we can do great things, but it can be a difficult night, and we have to be there to support each other and help each other in the difficult moments. And then if we can create something and play our own game, then maybe we can do something."

Meanwhile, Club Brugge boss Nicky Hayen has urged his players to embrace the frantic atmosphere awaiting them tonight.

The Scottish champions have seven points from their first four fixtures while Club Brugge have six from a possible 12 with wins over Sturm Graz and Aston Villa and defeats to Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in Italy, where Raphael Onyedika was sent off in the first half before the visitors eventually lost 3-1.

Hayen said: "The first 35 minutes were really good in Milan. Unfortunately, we got a player sent off at that moment, and that changed the picture of the game. But we know the atmosphere is really amazing here, and this is something that we have to embrace, because you can't fight against it, and this is not what we want to do.

"Every football player who wants to play football at the highest level wants to play in this kind of atmosphere. So that's what we have to do, embrace it and the game will be played between the white lines, that's it. And if there are 60,000 people or 5,000 people, actually, for us, it doesn't matter.

"You just have to perform on the pitch. And in Milan, but also in the games again against Aston Villa and Dortmund, they were at a very good level. And this is the level that we have to perform every single time, again in the league, but also in the Champions League and when you perform on that level, then you can have a good result.

"I heard from people around that the expectations here are really big and that the atmosphere will be crazy and that they are waiting for us. But like I said, these are the games that you want to play as a player, and we just have to stay calm, embrace these kind of feelings and just perform on the pitch.

"We don't have to be busy with all the other things, just the performance on the pitch will be the most important thing. I think it's a game between two teams who really want to play football, try to play dominant football with a lot of attacking options. I think it will be an open game. There will be a lot of transition moments. And yeah, let's hope it will be an exciting evening and a good end for us."
