Club owner says ex-Coventry City boss Mark Robins is ‘unbelievable fit’ for Championship rivals
Darragh MacAnthony believes Mark Robins needs to take time out to re-energise and will then bounce back at another Championship club after being sacked by Coventry City.
The outspoken Peterborough United chairman and owner says the former long-standing Sky Blues boss is a “wonderful” manager who, he reckons, would be an “absolutely unbelievable fit” for Luton Town if they were to part company with under pressure Rob Edwards any time soon.
“Let’s see what Mark does, whether he takes some time off, is he going to re-energise?” said MacAnthony, speaking on the latest edition of his Hard Truth: Inside the Football Industry podcast.

“Sometimes as managers they go five, six, seven years non-stop. Ask my manager (Darren Ferguson), it’s a lot. The average job is 11 months and he was there for seven years. And the stuff he’s done, two promotions, Wembley play-off final, FA Cup semi-final... Coventry were on their ****ing **** when he went in there.
“I remember back in the day they rang us about players when they were in League Two, and Barry (Fry, director of football) was saying they can’t pay the wages because they have a cap of two grand a week at the time, for a club the size of Coventry. I was moaning they weren’t paying enough for a loan player years ago and suddenly they’re spending millions on one of my players (Ephron Mason-Clark). That’s credit to the Mark Robins effect, and that all happened within seven years.
“That’s credit to the new owner who has come in with his own expectations but again, let’s see how it plays out, but he won’t be out of work long.”
Asked if his future is at another Championship club, he said: “Oh yeah, I think so, without a doubt. It depends on the job and I think he would want the right job. For example, I think if the Luton job came up, and he’s (Rob Edwards) under a lot of pressure, I think Robins would be an absolutely unbelievable fit for them.
“I’m not advocating for the Luton manager to lose his job, I’m just going by the tea leaves and what I see out there from the fan base and whatever else, they’ve had a rough start, Luton, so I think it would have to be the right job. The right club, the right job but he’s not done by a long shot.
“He could probably do with a month or two off, re-energise the batteries, recharge... He’s a wonderful manager; very, very good.”
However, he warned: “When you are out of football a long time you get forgotten quickly. So if I was his agent I would say look, it’s November, wait until January. Just give yourself two months, take eight weeks off, go away with the family and get away from football. Stay out of the Sky studios, don’t do the usual what managers do, whatever.
“Eddie Howe took a period of time after Bournemouth until the right job came, which was Newcastle. I think he took a whole year and then he reappeared on Sky. I think Mark needs a couple of months. He can’t take a year, just a couple of months and see what jobs come up going into January.
“And even if one or two clubs want him now, I would say, if you want me you’ll wait four or five weeks. Let me re-energise, and some clubs will do that. But if for some reason Darren (Ferguson) retired and it was during the season and I had the perfect candidate and I would try to hold over if it was the right one. Timing’s everything, so let’s see, but I wish him all the best.”
