Colombia legend disagrees with Unai Emery and Faustino Asprilla as Jhon Duran 'cannot lose it'
Jhon Duran has been told to ignore his critics and not lose his “essence”.
The Aston Villa striker is enjoying a great season so far in the Premier League and Europe. He is Villa’s top scorer with eight goals, netting four of those in the English top-flight and two in the Champions League.
But the Colombian has also attracted criticism for his reaction to being substituted against Bologna in the Champions League last month. Having started the tie, he scored Villa’s second goal in a 2-0 win before being replaced by Ollie Watkins shortly after his goal.
Duran was visibly annoyed with boss Unai Emery’s decision, thumping and kicking seats on the substitutes’ bench, prompting criticism from Colombian legend Faustino Asprilla, who said: “It’s normal for anyone who plays football to get angry when they are substituted, but what’s not normal is the tantrum he is throwing.

“He should be calmer. He scores the goal and then all of a sudden he has this reaction. It’s a very bad thing for the team, for his teammates. He has to understand that there are many more players with the desire to play and who couldn’t do it.
“The coach has to talk to him, say that it can’t happen again, that this doesn’t happen again, neither there at the club nor in the national team.
“In Europe it’s the coaches who are in charge of transfers, they are the people who have the decision to choose whether you go or not. If they see him having these tantrums, he’s going to have a lot of difficulty if they want him later on.”
But another former Colombia international has disagreed with Asprilla, urging Duran not to change his ways. Speaking to Caracol Radio's VBar, Chicho Serna said: “It seems great to me because that is his essence and he cannot lose it.
“People must understand that we should not have a tape to always give the same answers. He is a young player who is already succeeding in England and the best clubs in the world want him, and if he is authentic, even better.”
Emery has previously addressed the incident, saying: "After the (Bologna) match and the press conference, I told him, 'we won a Champions League game, you scored a goal in the Champions League, I don’t want to be answering questions about this'.
"Of course, he is young, he has passion sometimes, and sometimes he is showing his energy - positive and negative - but it’s not relevant, not important.
"Because I spoke to him and in one minute, we finished this conversation, without problems. The problem is having to ask questions about it."
