Liverpool forward Luis Diaz was on the losing side last night as Colombia was beaten 1-0 by 10-man Ecuador in World Cup qualifying. And he has urged his teammates to "evaluate and correct" their mistakes amid a tricky spell for the national team.

This was the first time in 60 years that Colombia has lost on home soil against Ecuador and the first time since 2022 that it has lost two games in a row having also been beaten by Uruguay in this international break. "This setback leaves many doubts about the team, which will have to rethink its strategy in view of the important challenges that await it in 2025," El Espectador wrote.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, who has previously been linked with a transfer move to Anfield, was sent off after 34 minutes but Diaz and co couldn't find a way through. It was a frustrating night for Diaz and as his country's main man, his performance was scrutinized in the media.

Diaz hit the post in the first half but "didn't have the best night" according to El Heraldo, while Futbol Red suggested on more than one occasion that the Liverpool winger "went too far as an individualist" and should have been looking to pass to his teammates. It added that this was a day Diaz and his team "went blank" and "dropped from second to fourth place in the table".

He was described as "unbalanced" by Caracol News and "he was unable to stand out". Diaz was more "rebellious" in the second half and "hooking from outside to inside and, on several occasions, looking for a shot from medium distance, just like in Liverpool."

"Both at a group and individual level, we have to evaluate and correct," Diaz said at the final whistle. "We had many chances, if we didn't take advantage of them, the opponent would have hit us and they hit us first (in the seventh minute of the match). That was also a mistake. We can't start a match and have them score a goal like that."

Liverpool.com says: Diaz has been in great form for his club so this shouldn't knock him out of his stride. At international level, almost everything is on him to make the difference, whereas at Liverpool, he can express himself in a much better team. He will hope to show that next week against Real Madrid and Manchester City.
